For me, at least, the thought of dying makes me want to throw shit away. I realize this is ridiculous (I'm 27), but I saw, during the clean-up effort, the ridiculous amounts of crap that my late grandparents had collected over 50+ years of living in their house and I thought: I will never, ever leave this much stuff for my family to reluctantly sift through. The habit of keeping what you love/truly need and tossing the rest is a skill I'd like to hone over the next, oh, 50 years (if I'm lucky), and thinking about my hypothetical death (can't take it with you, etc., etc.) is probably a good place to start.

Also, I just recently read Roz Chast's "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?" where she dispenses some excellent insight about amassing things. I highly recommend this book (if only because Roz Chast is an American treasure): http://www.amazon.com/Cant-Talk-abou…

I'd like to know if this follows with people who are constantly aware of mortality- Funeral service workers, ER docs and oncologists, etc. I only ask because I'm an embalmer and I don't think I make crazy or impulsive purchases often.

Good point! And an embalmer raised by heathens! Maybe embalming people is no longer a reminder of your own mortality. Perhaps your reminders are other things like wrinkles on your face or birthdays.

Also I'm now really curious about you and think you must have some stories....

Ah, but I bet if one of the main actors from Saved by the Bell died tomorrow, sales for DVDs and memorabilia would sky-rocket. So, the best marketing strategy is death AND nostalgia.

Am I a cold-hearted bitch if Screech's death would make me giggle?

Nothing makes me want to shop quite like having PMS. And yet, nothing else has quite the same disastrous results. Questionable purchases and tears in the dressing room all around.
