Why is that politicians keep complaining about the poor when they are the ultimate welfare mooches. The Governors live in public housing paid for by the taxpayers. They get free transportation since the taxpayers pay for their cars and gas. We pay for their offices and places of business. They get free food at work and home. They have to constantly beg people to give them money so they can "work." What makes Chris Christie better than a panhandler on welfare? Nothing. Chris Christie relies on the kind donations of strangers (and known lobbyists).

I hope you extend that philosophy to every single government worker, including teachers, librarians and everybody else who is paid with tax payer money.

Yup, that would be the Chris Christie who used a police helicopter to take him to his son's baseball game, and then was chauffeured from the helicopter 100 yards to the stands.

I love that they frame turning down free money as taking a principled stand. However, when it's time to pay taxes, their attitude is, "I don't agree with tax loopholes, but of corse I'll take advantage of them, because, hey, that's just common sense."

The fact that you framed your argument around "free money" completely discredits any point you were trying to make.

I apologize. Hyperbole took control. Of course every $54 dollars the feds offer costs the state $1. Do you happen to know how much mitt romney pays his accountants?

How the hell is turning down cash from the Federal government a sign of fiscal conservatism. You are deliberately turning down funds which put your state in the black. You are actually making your financial situation worse just to make a point on behalf of rich jerkoffs.

Where do you think that Federal money comes from? It's just printed funds. The Fed makes and sells bonds for which money is generated as debt. You don't have to agree with the position, but it is a fiscal stance.

I'm having a hard time understanding your logic. Are you suggesting that if every state did this, then everyone (i.e. the whole country) would be in a better financial situation?

"The third holdout, Michigan, is led by Republican Rick Snyder. The three states accounted for 20 percent of food-stamp recipients in the 16 states."

Mr. Snyder is not running for president; he's just an asshole.

"Perhaps the weight loss of poor people on starvation diets will solve America's obesity crisis and save our health care system billions? Compassionate conservatism is indeed alive and well."

I'm glad you cut the commentators off at the pass here.

The most amazing part of this story is that there are journalists who still think that Chris Christie and Scott Walker are legitimate Presidential contenders.

I am continually appalled by the lack of empathy in so many people (usually conservatives) in this country. Have none of them EVER experienced or had close family members who have experienced poverty, unemployment, illness, or any of the other shit that can happen to someone in their life? I just don't get it, it's like they've tapped into some primitive "I got mine, fuck everyone else" instinct that for some reason many people not only don't find as disgusting as I do, but laud as "American" and (worse and more puzzlingly) "Christian".

"I GOT MINE - FUCK EVERYONE ELSE" should be added to the flag and the currency. It has become the prevailing American attitude in the past 10 years or so...and not just regarding political/social policies. It has penetrated every aspect of American life, down to lane-changing on the freeway, and line-forming in the grocery store. Everyone thinks they exist in a vacuum; so few remember we are but one in a larger community of others and should behave as such.

I think in many cases it's not that. It's that many of them get food stamps too...but they get it LEGITIMATELY, unlike all the other poors who are getting it just because they are lazy.

Food stamps for me is legit. Food stamps for you is bad because you're lazy.

Less time spent on eating means more time for pulling up those bootstraps. Wasting all that stuffing food in their mouths when they could go out there and try not being poor.
