Apparently I am heartless because I don't think this was offensive in the slightest. The timing's somewhat unfortunate, sure, but the headless horseman is a huge part of the Ichabod Crane story, which is a teensy tiny bit older than ISIS. Also, it's not like beheading is so extremely rare that everyone would have automatically thought of the journalist when they saw the promotions — not only was it a common form of execution for centuries, but, according to Gawker, some guy in New York decapitated himself as a suicide method earlier this week.

This seems like another instance of people desperately wanting to find something to be offended by.

Really, you don't think that journalists (the people who were emailed) would be particularly sensitive about this>?

That's complicated. Do I think journalists might be extra-sensitive? Sure, because I am one and we all want to think we're doing BIG IMPORTANT WORK — even if we're TV reporters, which is not quite the same as infiltrating terror cells in Syria. Do I think it's a rational thing to be sensitive about? Not really, for the reasons listed above.

while it's tempting to crap on Fox, it sounds like they handled it the best way they could.

Agreed. I think it was more unfortunate than thoughtless.

That does suck. But I'm still super hype for Sleepy Hollow to come back.

Um. IS is beheading plenty of people fairly regularly these days. Is it only bad timing because the guy was American? Because if they had picked a different day, it would have been the 3 Iraqi people who had been beheaded that day, and no one would point the ad out.

I think that any sane person would have nixed this entire ad campaign, considering that there have been two American journalists beheaded in two weeks (James Foley and Steven Sotloff). I'm Canadian and live in Europe, and these are very high profile events here as well (especially since the ISIS member speaks with a London accent in the video), so it's not just an American thing. Maybe the American public in general has become so desensitized to violence + is so out of touch with what's going on in the world today that this seems like an overreaction, but from an outsider perspective this ad campaign is so callous and frivolous it's disturbing.

Thank you for pointing this out. There are things worth our outrage: namely, the atrocities being committed by IS and their ilk. An important part of that outrage is solidarity with those Iraqis and Syrians who are murdered and oppressed, and using our voices as constituents and human beings of conscience to protest. It does not include some not-that-funny-anyway e-cards.

The solution to this is clear: someone should draw Sotloff's face on a pumpkin.
