Kind of a lazy, dull idea for a thesis project if you ask me.

Yea, good thing no one asked me. Or else I would have told them that this is a lazy, dull idea for a thesis project.

This makes me proud to be a Columbia alum, and that isn't something I've been able to say a lot during the past few months.

    Give 'em hell, Emma.

You should be proud of her but not proud of Columbia because they are obviously not punishing her rapist, i do not understand why is he still on the campus?

Who is her rapist? Why can't we find this information out?

It is awesome what she's doing. I really hope she posts a follow up video or paper because I would love to know how the project turns out. I'm curious how many people will help her, how people react to her explanation. But, am I wrong to want to know the final outcome? Like it's her prerogative whether or not to post it publicly, but I am really curious how it will work out.

She says in the video that part of the piece will be performed/available in a physical location, so it seems like things will be revealed over the course of her remaining time at school.

The mattress is dressed a bit too skimpily for its message to be believable.

It's wrong for people to take justice into their own hands, rather than, or further than, using the legal system in place. An example of this, for the confused, would be using mob violence against a criminal. Let's start with this assumption for this discussion.

With this assumption in mind, this girl is doing this in a very unusual way: she's only indirectly encouraging other students to bully her rapist out of the school he paid for.

Taking the initial assumption I put in place in mind, is what this girl is doing wrong? I am interested in answers.

She does not mention who the rapist is at any point, so how could she be encouraging anything against him?

Also, forcing people to argue with an assumption that is not yet proven isn't a solid debate whatsoever. The legal system has a clear bias from the moment of the report down to sentencing. It is far from a given to say that it's wrong to look for justice beyond a legal system designed to not give you justice.

Oh yeah, she really doesn't say who he is. I guess that's different then. Though it might not remain that way, at which point I suppose we'll see the repercussion.

Also, this discussion sort of only works within this assumption! If we assume that it's right for people to take justice within their own hands, then what she's doing is clearly right no matter what I said. However, this becomes more of a weird issue when we assume it's wrong. It's a discussion only people who agree with me can have, and I really wanted to have it.

Also: I couldn't ever prove to you what is "wrong", just like you couldn't ever prove to me what is a "solid debate".

I am torn between appreciation that it's for a worthy cause and irrational hatred of all "performance art".

I helped organize this event that involved a lot of performance art and almost all of it appeared to be people doing bizarre things while acting haughtily enough that people were forced to assume that there was some deeper significance that they just weren't getting. I enjoy that this actually has a palpable message to it and isn't just attention-seeking.

It is massively attention seeking and that's sort of why it's great. It also has a tangible purpose and pretty clear link to the idea, which makes it less opaque and irritating than a lot of performance art. The mattress is an awkward, exhausting bit of burden to carry around all day, and it will effect everyone around her.

I was prepared to go full-on Grumpy Cat about this, but the more she talked, the more I liked it.

Way to turn a crap experience into an interesting experiment, Ms. Sulkowicz. I look forward to hearing about how your campus responds, as well.

Really interesting idea, unfortunately I think she's going to be carrying that mattress around for a while. I'm less than optimistic she'll be met with anything other than further ridicule and shaming. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Really shows what a sorry state campus sexual assault policies are in when this is what a student is doing for their thesis project instead of, you know, anything else.

While Columbia's administration has proved themselves to be a bunch of dicks, its campus culture is usually pretty open to this type of thing and there has been a lot of support amongst the student body for these girls who have come forward. Columbia students can be annoyingly righteous sometimes, but it's the type of place where I doubt she would meet much public ridicule for this (and if she did, she'd have people to defend her).
