I read an article that one of the bases for Scotland wanting independence was that they might be sitting on a large oil reserve so they want to profit off that, but then the author looked at the data and argued that the oil reserves weren't as lucrative as Scotland was theorizing. I don't know. I read the article a long time ago.

The Scotland issue is one that hasn't really been covered on this website. Could we get a pros and cons list? I feel like it's been a long time since we got a new European country (that last one would have been in the 90's I think), and it would be the first time that Scotland would be independent since 1603. That's a very significant amount of time that it's been included in the UK (though technically it wasn't called the UK back then).

How about it, Kinja? Pros/cons? All I've got:

      Pro:

      • gives U.S. schoolchildren better excuse not to be able to find Scotland or Great Britain on maps
      • absolutely no effect whatsoever on international soccer competition

      Con:

      • potentially raises U.S. import costs on haggis and gingers
      • never hear the end of it from that American guy on your block who insists on identifying as Scottish even though he's an Anglo-Saxon mishmash who never ventures north of Atlanta unless it's in the heated seats of his Escalade

I lived in Edinburgh for two years, and have spoken to many Scottish friends about this issue, and ALL OF THEM agree that it would be disastrous for Scotland to declare independence. Part of Alex Salmond's plan is to rely on oil revenue, which may not be enough to keep them financially afloat.

I liked JK Rowling's worried take on the campaign, which she argues "places higher importance on 'sticking it' to David Cameron, who will be long gone before the full consequences of independence are felt, than to looking after your own. It prefers the grand 'up yours' gesture to considering what you might be doing to the prospects of future generations."

Here are some of the articles that I've seen posted by people in the know:

Also, the assumption that Scotland can't match Russia in a fight is rich. As if Russia has the market cornered on bloodthirsty jingoistic crusaders with anti-Semitic tendencies

Did Business Insider farm its work out to Thought Catalog? This is embarrassingly bad reasoning.

The bigger problem for the Tridents is that England doesn't really have anywhere for them to call home if independence goes through.

Could you elaborate? Do they require sufficiently large docks of the kind that only one base in Scotland has or something? I'm pretty clueless in that area.

Not sure of the specifics but the stuff I have read says it would take a decade for England to build an appropriate base for them.

Scotland won't be defenseless. They can simply sling crates of haggis from their fine medieval catapults. If that doesn't work, they have their own submarine to deploy:

This theory seems a bit implausible and far fetched

The contents of a munchy box vary but may typically include kebab meat, fried chicken, pizza, chicken tikka, onion rings, pakora, naan bread, garlic bread, coleslaw, other fast foods and sauces. There is sometimes a salad item and, invariably, chips.

My boyfriend's cousin is a Catholic from Northern Ireland and lives in Scotland now (and voting for separation in this election). He works in corrections now but for about 4-5 years he worked for the Russian equivalent of the Merchant Marines. apparently they had a large angry Northern Irish and Scottish contingent who wanted to do that kind of work but hated England so much they went to work for Russia instead.

Pretty sure Russian vessels are landing all over Scotland already, in order to pick up more crew.

You realise that the Merchant Navy and the Navy are different things right? The Merchant Navy is just the name used for a country's fleet of commercial boats.

Yes....which is why I used the term merchant marine and didn't just say Navy. Thanks for going on your assumptions that I don't understand the difference though.
