    James Franco's beef with Gawker stretches back to at least 2008, but recently it intensified after my colleague J.K. Trotter wrote a post called "James Franco Is Living With a Man" based on an innuendo-filled New York Times piece that probed Franco's relationship with an actor he has directed multiple times and is sharing an apartment with in Brooklyn this summer, Scott Haze.

    As near as I could tell, the Gawker piece existed only to strongly suggest that Franco is Secret Gay (i.e. the worst kind of gay) based on the fact that he has a roommate that he actually socializes with and... nothing else, really.

    At least the NYT piece had a larger thesis than that. I actually didn't think the NYT piece was nearly as innuendo-filled as the Gawker piece blatantly was. The Gawker piece was much more "hee hee, titter-titter, can you imagine, TWO MEN in one house? They must have TEH BUTTSECKS!"

    I wanted Franco to tell me more about what it is to do things with the express purpose of attention, but I thought I should play that one close to my chest.

    So you're implying that he does this (of course he does), and you... don't... ?

    Rich, we love you expressly FOR the things you do explicitly for personal attention. Don't be naive, honey. They're your Best Things.

      Nah, I'm just saying that he shouldn't be a hypocrite about other people doing things for attention. (And anyway, Schulz's pieces were no more desperate for attention than any other art that is released for public consumption.) Of course I'm not over here whispering to myself. Of course I'm writing to be read, which is to say, for attention.

      Personal attention, though, is a different matter. Would be too indulgent to go into it here, but my favorite part of writing is writing. What comes before and especially after has a tendency to put me ill at ease.

    Of course gay men are capable of homophobia. Your suggestion that it can't happen, or at least that it's rare, is so obviously false. Y'all need to lay off this series of articles. It's uninteresting, and it doesn't help the community at all to shame allies — whether they're straight or gay. Encouraging shock and scandal over someone's sexuality just keeps more people in the closet. Stop. Grow up.

      I didn't suggest that, actually. I did say that it's an interesting turn of events that a straight man would be accusing a gay man of homophobia. It's progress, or something like it. #2014

      I don't think Trotter's post was homophobic, though. I don't think that speculating about someone's sexuality is necessarily homophobic. I think Franco's public behavior, in fact, encourages such speculation, which is why when he calls homophobia it's like ASDFJKL;.

    Better yet, please, find a new yin to your yang. Break the cycle of abuse. Let the Franco train roll on without you. Starve that fucker from all the media ass-licking. Find someone newer, better, fresher, less annoying, and more genuinely talented (fine...he's a decent actor, but in all other departments he's really and truly embarrassing). Don't let a few extra clicks seduce you into his vacant, facile, and soul-less facsimile of what real performance art can be.
