    "The Sanctioning Officer will impose sanctions that are:

    Fair and appropriate given the facts of the particular case;

    Consistent with the University's handling of similar cases;

    Adequate to protect the safety of the campus community; and

    Reflective of the seriousness of gender-based misconduct."

    Because nothing says "clear policy" like a bunch of adjectives. They still have a lot of work to do.

      I don't know, "Consistent with the University's handling of similar cases" when you let a serial offender remain on campus is pretty rich, too. Look ma, we're consistent!

    Can we just make campus rape a criminal matter like it is everywhere else? Of course that means we need to improve criminal rape investigation procedures, but that still seems better than allowing school entities with a direct conflict of interest (i.e. pressing reason$ NOT to admit sexual assaults happen among their student body) handle the investigations.

      This question somehow keeps coming up - "but it's a crime, so go to the police already!"

      It has been addressed thoroughly and articulately on Jezebel by Callie herself.

      Just out of interest, what happens to people who aren't attending Columbia then?

      Columbia's not an island, rather it's on an island with nearly a million-and-a-half other people, and I can't help but feel there's a certain amount of elitism underpinning this push to improve things just for Columbia students. The authorities in both situations are ineffective, callous and inflexible but the reality is that Columbia students are a lot better situated to push the NYPD into improved behavior than a woman living in Grant Houses is. What happens to her?

    Each and every case should be turned over to the police! Why is that so difficult to implement?

      Well, the dismal conviction rate for one. Not to mention that the way criminal rape cases are handled also needs serious work to be less traumatic for the survivor.

      True, but I'm not seeing universities handle campus rape cases any better, and at least there's a chance of serious consequences in the criminal justice system. I don't understand how someone can commit a violent felony and the worst punishment they'll face is getting kicked out of school. How is that not a due process issue? Hell, if I were a wannabe rapist I'd probably be more likely to offend in college since I'd know there was no chance of prison time or a criminal record.

      Short answer, I'd much rather campus rapes become police matters and then start working on criminal justice reform than counting on a whole bunch of different private entities to reform their individual policies.

    Callie, I feel awful for you that you put God knows how much time into your piece on why reporting to the police is not a solution, and all you ever get in response to these posts is "just go to the police!" I promise you that your work is read, absorbed, and reflected on by some of us. You're not banging your head against a wall, even though you might think it to read the comments.

      If the problem is "the police stink," the solution is to improve the police, not adjudicate rape through a university.

      I actually hadn't read that one, I appreciate the link.

      Of course, I'm not the one you're preaching to, but it's still an interesting read.

      Columbia has actually been pretty good in showing sensitivity to the LGBT community in recent years, hence the name.

    Sooooo....where in the new policies does it state:

    #1: all cases will be immediately turned over to the New York City Police Department as Columbia University is not a legal authority

      Apparently, that's a contentious issue because some advocates say victims shouldn't have to make a thing out of it if they want to, well, make a thing out of it.

      But if it's being reported to the school, hasn't the victim already made a thing out of it?

    Why is that organizations always say that their policies changes are do to so-and-so's concerns when they don't actually consult the people these policies affect?

      When we go outside of the bubble we are living in it gets complicated. Actually consulting with the people who are being affected by a policy change makes it so much harder and messy. This 19th century style of management is rife in business, academia, government etc.

      As sad as this is I just don't see colleges and schools in general getting better at handling rape anytime soon.
