"It's certainly possible that many—perhaps the majority—of the deleted posts committed lesser sins, like insufficient photo sourcing"

How exactly is this a lesser sin? Stolen photos are worth less than the stolen words? At least with the words, they occasionally move around the prepositions. They outright steal copyright-protected photos.

I don’t think anyone—or at least most people—automatically assume that a photo in a post was taken by the person who composed the post, regardless of whether or not the photo is properly sourced.

Most people do, however, assume that the words placed outside of quote marks (or block quote formatting) were written by the post’s author.

I am not a copyright expert, though, so you’re probably more right than I am about the moral or legal parity between taking words and taking photos.

I don't know many writers or photographers who care what the reader assumes via-a-vis original authorship. They just don't want to be copied, curated and aggregated so aggressively that it's impossible to earn a living. Text and images are protected by the exact same copyright laws. BuzzFeed steals both with equal eagerness, and in both cases it's scummy. Then again, how can a staffer be expected to produce thousands of posts without theft? Thousands!

I don't care what the fuck the AP style guide says now. It's always going to be more than to me. Also, have fun combating the trolls.

I don't know if they still do this but they used to credit photos lifted from Tumblr blogs not to the blogs themselves but to the generic Tumblr url for the image. For instance, if they linked to an image such as this one, instead of linking to the post like I just did, they would link to this (the source of the image), effectively erasing the source where they lifted the content from. One might argue that they were just lifting GIFs without any creativity value but there are two counterpoints to this 1) if they had no value, they should have created their own rather than taking them from Tumblrs who get no compensation and 2) they also lifted original work like recipe illustrations for their food section. I think they have discontinued this shady practice now but it was pretty disrespectful towards the people who put their content online. After all, links are currency on the internet.

It always surprised me how they were able to get away with sourcing images to "i.imgur.com" or "media.tumblr.com," as if that's a meaningful attribution at all. Those Imgur guys sure are great at making gifs!

This Gawker vs. BuzzFeed shit is like Godzilla battling Gamera, and I'm lovin' it.

For the record, I'm rooting for Gawker (but shh, don't tell my friend at BuzzFeed).

    Also for the record?

I plagiarized that "Gamera vs. Godzilla" analogy from Neil Gaiman's recent tumblr post about Amazon vs. Hatchett.

And I stole the "I'm lovin' it" from McDonald's stupid tagline, or whatever.

It seemed to be in the spirit of things.
