My grandmother and aunt both died of ALS. I did a walk for charity in their memory recently. But it's strange - when I told people what I was doing and why, most had never even heard of ALS or even the common name Lou Gehrig's disease. It's really hard to raise money to cure a disease no one has ever heard of. So while no, this doesn't necessarily cure ALS, I do think awareness does need to be raised on this particular illness. But if anyone would like to donate, here's the website for the main charity raising money to find a cure: http://www.alsa.org/

Also, ALSA - the ALS Association - does walks to raise money for a cure in many cities around the country. Many corporations sponsor teams. Perhaps Jezebel or The Today Show could take part in the New York City walk, if you guys want to do good here? The New York City walk takes place every May.

Possibly because this post existed before the return of the greys, all of the comments are showing as pending. It also looks like they haven't fixed the bug that is keeping us from recommending a comment out of pending, so I'm trying a reply to see if that works.

Good info. I'm sorry for you loss.

I am also trying a reply. Of course the ice bucket thing won't cure ALS - but it has inspired unprecedented giving. http://www.alsa.org/news/media/pre...

"Between July 29 and today, August 12, The ALS Association and its 38 chapters have received an astonishing $4 million in donations compared to $1.12 million during the same time period last year."

"We have never seen anything like this in the history of the disease," said Barbara Newhouse, President and CEO of The ALS Association. "We couldn't be more thrilled with the level of compassion, generosity and sense of humor that people are exhibiting as they take part in this impactful viral initiative."

Maybe we can make this article seem a little less preachy now?

Not to mention that participants are SUPPOSED to donate either way. $10 if you get doused and $100 if you don't. I'm failing to see how charitable donations are a bad thing.

Charitable contributions are always a good thing, as is raising awareness. But if you're going to try to raise awareness, shouldn't you be aware of what you're raising awareness about? Having lost my husband to ALS, I'm acutely aware of how important that $4 million is....That said, I've got the same problem as Jezebel with those people who think "ASL" is a great cause, who make no mention of ALS in conjunction with their ice bucket antics, who make no contribution, or who, like Matt Lauer, are so unaware as to contribute elsewhere.
