It would be great to get some kind of "downvote" option—I'm told that we're experimenting with, at the very least, a "flag post"/"call moderator" button to let us know about the worst trolls or spammers.

I feel like that might cause a lot of butthurtedness. If your comment isn't up to snuff, you don't get stars, oh well, try harder next time. Imagine what it would do to people's self-esteem to get what amounts to negative stars.

My legit, non-jokey answer is real reportage. I want Trotter to keep up the good work, and I want to see more of it. Not going to disparage the aggregations. They're usually fun stories to read and I click the shit out of them. But I'd like to see Gawker get back to (what I consider) its roots: Covering the stories that nobody else is covering. Rather than covering the stories that the Reddit/Huffingon Post axis is covering.

More reporting is absolutely a priority, though it's also, obviously, a slow, resource-intensive process. What kinds of stories in particular are you thinking of?

Yeah, that's the question, right? It's a tough one. I know well that you can spend a month on something and it lands like a turd on the homepage. So not necessarily the think pieces about identity. I really don't like the cultural tourism stuff. Like, uncovering scandals and shit? I guess? And maybe only essays that aren't about the writer him or herself but about a subject that person is passionate about? (I think that's the main problem with the essays now. They're so... self-centered.)

Let's talk turkey: More Lennay. More Shep Smith. More "these are the news orgs that drug test." I know very well that this sort of stuff is easier said than done and you can't just pull them out of thin air; my main hope is that Gawker gives its writers, even if not all of them, the time to chase stuff down and the space not to have to hit a certain number of page views and posts in a month. (NB I have no idea if that's how Gawker works, but.)

I'll start with what I can guarantee NONE of us come here for: Stories about the Kardashians, Bieber, Kanye, etc. If TMZ is running it, gawker doesn't need to.

Seriously. Mrs. Notalentbigasshian doesn't need Gawker to bestow on her any more attention than she already gets from every other fucking site on the Internet. Same with that turd burglar Bieber.

It really doesn't take much to bait them, to be fair. All you have to do is mention the words back and round and check within one paragraph and they just light up!

    1. COTD and temporary Banhammer for people who respond to trolls— there needs to be *something* around here to help enforce some kind of commenting standards.
    2. Customizable dashboard of our favorite GM blogs as well as a directory of sub-blogs. It would also be GREAT if you had a search function that covered all blogs.
    3. More political reporting in the vein of Pareene and Newell— more of the "issue of the day" struggles among Congress and the President, not just the "haha, look at that stupid politician" stuff. I also like Adam et al's reporting on foreign policy and defense-type matters and Michelle's coverage of SCOTUS, etc. as well, so don't jettison that.
    4. More FUN. I really like it when the writers interact with us lowly commenters. It makes us feel special. :)
    5. I used to feel that Gawker was my "go-to" place for breaking news, gossip, and the dumb stuff that people will be talking about tomorrow. I feel less that way; sometimes you guys cover stories DAAAAAAYS after they've become a "thing" on the Internet. Some of that is attributable to the fact that you have more competition these days, but a lot of that is just the fact that you don't cover stuff that I used to depend on you to cover.
    6. Speaking of gossip, where is it??
    7. More follow-up on popular stories you cover. While I don't expect you to follow every fart and giggle of some cases, it would be nice to get follow up through resolution of cases. The Charlie Bothuell and Philip Chism cases are two off the top of my head that haven't had any follow up stories about them, and both cases are still ongoing with major developments.

Pretty much agree with you, except if you're going to ban people who engage the trolls, I think that we then need an agreed upon definition of a troll. Some people here think MauryCompson is a troll, but he's not. Some people think toothpetard is a troll, but he's not. I've actually had a couple of people accuse me of being a troll over the years — which, really, moi?!

Maybe it would be better if gawker simply put up a banner gently reminding everyone to not feed the trolls — something that would stay visible on the screen no matter where one was in the scroll-down.

True, but whoever is bringing down the banhammer would be a Gawker writer and final determiner of who was and who was not a troll. Gawker writers know the difference between when trolls comment and when MauryCompson, toothpetard, you or me or any regular commenter is trolling. I do agree we need more frequent reminders about not engaging trolls generally.

Earlier today, I linked to a long post by Camille Dodero and was reminded of how much I loved her long form investigative pieces. I get that she no longer works for Gawker but that sort of stuff was good. Maybe get more in that style or commission her on a freelance basis?

Also, since we are here, a Europe vertical? All the Eurotrash news fit to snark! It'd do wonders to dispel the myth of "old world superiority" that many still believe in.

I love Camille, and would kill to get more long, beautifully written and tightly reported stories of the kind she does. Unfortunately, they're extremely expensive and hugely resource intensive. I'm exploring ways we can do them in budgets and timeframes that make sense for us.

Yeah, I am familiar with both the amount of $$ and resources such pieces take. Also, they have the added burden of not always being rewarding in terms of views and shareability (through lack of a better word) which makes it difficult to commission and a bit of a gamble. Though for what it's worth, Camille's work as well as Adrian Chen's are among the best I've read on any online publication ever. Adrian's work on Violent Acrez was superb. If you ever get the budget (one can only dream, right?) more of that stuff, please!

You have no idea how much I want my starred Gawker ID. I only have a burner because comment reputation means nothing.

Remember how Denton said that kinja would "elevate discourse" to such a level that Gawker would have to "curate" the good ones kinja was going to bring on a flood of geniuses? Remember how, in addition to all that, kinja was going to enable Gawker to scoop everyone because of anonymity? Denton acted like Beyonce's maid would pop up under KingBey'sMaid burner, to reveal dirt! Now, Gawker still gets its gossip from TMZ, Reddit, or other sites. They were so fucking cheap and stupid to announce they tried to crowd source their Rob Ford scoop, thereby letting everyone it exists and losing all value and credit Gawker would gotten. Gawker could have taken down a mayor; instead, it made a meme.
