It's not really that hard to kill someone. I don't think it requires intensive study. No one ever botches dog euthanasia, call a vet.

Professional ethics prevent everyone who could be competent at this from getting involved — help the state execute somebody and you lose your license. That said, any second year med or pharm student with access to Epocrates would be able to do this more competently than the state of Arizona.

You would think that the states would set up some shield laws to prevent the licensure issues.

Having scientists come out in favor of the death penalty might be a good way to turn conservatives against it. Or maybe they would just deny it even exists.

Haing Obama threaten to use his executive powers to expedite the killing of all those on death row would certainly put the kibosh on the whole deal.

Alternatively, we could just eliminate the death penalty altogether.

We should, but not because of this recent flap about "botched" executions. While troublesome, the real reason we shouldn't have the death penalty is because... there are no take-backs. A person wrongly convicted and sentenced to life can at least be given back what is left of their life. It's not perfect, but it's better than killing them and THEN saying, "Oops!"

Or to put it another way, how many innocent people is it okay to kill in order to execute those who really "deserve it"? And everyone considering the answer to that question should also ask themselves if their answer would change if THEY were wrongly convicted. Or maybe someone they care about? Still worth it?

USAF want to get rid their A-10. That should free up those GAU-8A. That's one way to ensure a quick death that outrun the nerve's transmission of pain.

I kind of like the spectacle in this idea. It would be insanely quick, too.

This criminal didn't feel a thing. Sure, the optics of a guy gasping for air for 2 hours are not good, but ask any med student/doctor and he'll tell you that the amount of anesthetics used in executions will render anybody numb. What do we really care here? That the criminal doesn't feel a thing or that we have a reliable and predictable manner of executing people? If we cared more about the latter, we would choose a firing squad: reliable and the criminal STILL does not feel a thing. However, we feel queasy about it. the optics of a firing squad seems to depict a view of our society with which we do not feel comfortable. Let's ask the right questions. The problem here is not the anesthetic cocktail; it's the execution technique.

Seriously? Do some research on medieval methods. His two victims from 25 years ago deserved better.

I oppose the death penalty, but isn't the preferred methodology, in states that allow euthanasia, a massive overdose of barbiturates?

There are some states that do that, yes. It's not "preferred" though. There are supply issues involved. Basically, the whole thing needs to be brought out into the open.

I was thinking "preferred" for euthanasia, rather than the death penalty. I watched a documentary on euthanasia in Oregon, and big barbiturate overdoses were what people taking advantage of the law got prescribed. Agree wholeheartedly that the DP discussion could do with a bit of sunlight.
