"Hmm how do I burnish my hip literary cred without actually having to do any thinking of my own? Should I say I love Gaddis? Should I talk about how quickly I read Infinite Jest? No no I'll just say I hate Jonathan Franzen, a writer whose talents surpass my own in every single way! Not that I know David Foster Wallace any better than he did, I didn't know him at all and they were close friends for 20 years. DFW's death wasn't about Franzen. It was about MEEEE! Everyone look at me and how smart and hip I am! Blazers with jeans BLARGHHH!"

There is no one more tiresome than a Franzen apologist. Except a Lena Dunham apologist. That essay about the dog was by far the worst thing ever in that magazine.

I've been reading it all my life, as it was always around the house. (They reel you in with cartoons.) So I have read some horrible pieces in there. But I was flabbergasted by the awfulness of Dunham's piece.

Every time I see someone with a New Yorker on public transport I assume they are insufferable.

Why do you assume she's jealous? I've read pieces on Gawker every bit as good as stuff in the New Yorker.

Say all you want about the writer in #8, but don't you dare speak ill of Iceland or its people. Iceland, quite simply, fucking rules. If you have not gone then you must. That is all I have.

I can't speak for meeting dudes, but I did plenty of women. I've been twice and still stay in contact with them. They are a great people and culture. Though, they are beautiful and will sleep with you, I recommend going to have fun, not have sex with everyone in sight.

I liked the Eileen Fisher profile, but found George Packer's Amazon take-down ("Cheap Words") facile.

      Leah,

I appreciate that your job is to "host" and respond to comments, and that you're probably at a bar somewhere doing this on your iPhone (as you should be), but can you capitalize properly and stuff?

      THX!

The thing about (the absurdly great) Janet Malcolm is that she is so conscious, and even obsessed, with the affect that the agenda of the profiler has on the profile itself, that she kinda makes everybody seem like a weirdo. She includes things other writers wouldn't think of including, and since we don't see such things in other profiles, we think it's weird. Some of that may reflect genuine quirkiness, but a lot of it is just Janet being Janet.
