The whole time I kept telling myself, "counSEL, counSEL," and I did it anyway. Updated. Thanks.

It's absurd to claim that he is mentally incapacitated, unless the legal meaning of that term is completely at odds with common sense.

You're right. He oozes a bitter bile of lonely, all-consuming hatefulness, but he's quite lucid. I don't even think "evil" is in the DSM-5.

It's entirely possible to seem 100% lucid at various points and still be suffering from the effects of Alzheimer's. It comes and goes so while he may seem totally fine in an interview he still experiences some periods of diminished capacity making him unfit to run a multi-billion dollar corporation. I'm not saying this is the case, just that it's possible. Also, I am not saying that you can blame the rampant racism on a Alzheimer's just that he may no longer be up to making the best life and business decisions.

How does one decide that being Donald Sterling's attorney is a good idea? I'm sure the money is phenomenal. But it can't be worth the reputational risk, right?

If you have enough money, the reputation is irrelevant.

What risk? Everyone needs a lawyer, even assholes. The reputational risk of law practice comes from getting a reputation as bad at your job, not that you will work for jerks.

And in this case, it's a win-win. If you lose then it was probably because your client is going off the rails and does not reflect on the quality of your work. If you happen to win the thing you look even more amazing because having this albatross of a client didn't stop you.

"...Until I die, I will be suing the NBA."

I'm sure Shelly can arrange a quick resolution on those terms.

I never thought I would ever say this, but I'm on Donald Sterling's side on this one.
