Only black politicians go to jail, the rest get off and make the Sunday Morning show circuit to sell us the Iraq War: Part III.

Except that is manifestly and demonstrably untrue. Louisiana is incredibly politically corrupt and New Orleans arguably more so, but the treatment those politicians get — black or white — is admirably even-handed. They all get away with tremendous amounts of graft and thievery until one or two of the more high-profile ones get caught.

10 years. Just like Edwin Edwards. I'd say Ray Nagin is continuing in the fine tradition of Louisiana politicians.

Ray Nagin didn't touch the tip of the iceberg of corruption that Edwin Edwards was. (Did you attempt to watch the very short lived reality show of EE's and his nutso wife? Bizarro-city.)

I refused to watch it. He was screwing college girls when I was in school back in the Dark Ages. He was old then, too.

It saddens me to see how Nagin turned out. I voted for the guy in his first term when he was a passionate reformer and a pro-business campaigner who promised to bring more jobs to a city that desperately needed them at the time. I cheered when he went after corruption in the brake tag inspection system. How did someone who came in as a reformer become emblematic of how deep the corruption runs in our city and state government? I felt the same way about Oliver Thomas.

As yet another disgraced Louisiana politician, Aaron Broussard, said of himself, "I came into politics at 23 as a dragon slayer. At 63, I'm going out as the dragon." How do you make that shit stop? I'm so tired of voting for the person I believe is least corrupt or the one who might at least use some of the money to benefit the city and state a la Edwin Edwards instead of taking it all for himself and his buddies.

I love my city, but oh, do the politicians weary me.

I grew up in LA and feel the same way about some of our elected officials. I think they all come in bright-eyed hoping to destroy the machine and make lasting change, but, for one reason or another, eventually become the machine.

"I came into politics at 23 as a dragon slayer. At 63, I'm going out as the dragon."

What a sad, incredibly honest quote. If only more politicians could admit that at the end of their careers.

Remember when his biggest scandal was saying that the post-Katrina New Orleans would remain a "chocolate city"? I loved him then.
