As someone who has been working in Film and TV for more than 20 years, here's a clue,

"just say no to bullshit jobs." There is so damn much work that you can wait for the good stuff or wind up broke, broken down, and crippled from dealing with shit shows.

I work on shoots that are "majors." I don't work on shit shows that either don't pay a living wage or want you to work on "spec." I get overtime after eight, double after twelve, insurance, annuity, retirement, a decent turn-around (usually ten hours minimum). We have safe working environments or we call in the authorities.

LA is full of Film and TV whores who do it for the "glamour." Let them have that crap.

That's an easy thing to say when you have the connections to find the good gigs and the money saved to sit it out in between, but not everyone is in your shoes bruh.

The problem is that 'above the line' producers think treating production staff like garbage is a form of 'paying your dues'. They also think 'if you don't like it, there are 5 more standing behind you to do it'...and they are right. There is a never ending conga-line of bleary eyed hopefuls just waiting for a chance...even if that chance is working in indentured servitude conditions. To be fair, the work is not that hard. I'm sorry, but it isn't. Its not that 'anyone can do it'...but I would not be far off saying 'most people' could do it.

Every few years there's lip service played to changing how productions are run and paid in Hollywood, and it goes nowhere. And this will go NOWHERE. Hollywood is riding our hunger for reality TV until the beast keels over dead. When you look at the production costs for something like 'Big Brother' or 'Real Housewives' vs. the revenue it brings in (even on a marginal season)...it's staggering.

That's the thing, a lot of this complaining sounds an awful lot like people complaining about having a tough time making a living as a musician. It's no doubt an awesome gig for those few that make it but it's long odds for even marginal success with no shortage of people in line. So if you're in a need to pay your mortgage/feed your kids kind of place in life then you need to be doing something else. Nobody dreams starry eyed of becoming an accountant, they do out of economic reality.

Not to speak out of turn or anything but what is it like for the "talent" on these shows? I used to watch Teen Mom every so often because I do admittedly love a shit show. And it always seemed weird/inauthentic that the girls continued to supposedly struggle financially from season to season. Aren't they getting paid at least a livable wage? It never made sense that Amber was always broke and the girls were still living with their parents or waiting tables. I would have guessed they'd clear about 100k a season. But maybe not? Are the people on such shows really underpaid or is it just for show?

    Anyone? Insiders?

Often the talent isn't paid at all. Ones who have a show based around them will be, eventually, but no, reality often doesn't pay the actors anything.

Really?! I was always under the impression that they received an "appearance fee" at the very least. Interesting.

While I believe the below the line crew get treated like shit, I happen to know that one of the Producers at 51 Minds was making $450K a year not that long ago. Don't tell me it's these fucking guys that are complaining.

there are producers and producers. Job titles are all over the place in production. These guys complaining are below the line. And those above the line just say "don't like it? Fine. Someone else will."

This sucks for these people. Full stop.

    But...

"Many of us live and breathe this business and are extremely proud of our work.. We do it in hopes of proving that this realm of programing is still creative and innovative, and to reach the masses with a message."

Wha?! Aren't we talking about reality TV?

All the better reason not to watch that shit. It's as bad for your mind as Twinkies are for your body. It's the Walmart (or McDonald's) of television.
