So if you see a cougar, it must be sick so kill it? There's something off about that logic. My neighbor saw one on his farm (I realize that's not a shopping mall) and thought the same thing, but the local wildlife ranger showed us on a map how the animal was simply using the same corridor of wilderness it always had, and was driven off course by the construction of a new home. Poor cougar didn't want to be anywhere near humans, his only predators, but we keep encroaching on his territory.

Actually one of the symptoms of rabies is animals acting strangely. That doesn't always mean that they go all Cujo, in some cases an animals that is acting more friendly towards or less afraid/cautious around humans could be a sign that they are afflicted and showing the first symptoms of rabies. Your story of seeing the cougar on someone's farm is different because most likely a farm is a big open space more similar to the cougar's natural habitat, while a shopping mall is almost the opposite of a cougar's natural habitat. I don't know, mistakes happen, that's why you always have to sign a death waiver when you get full anesthesia for surgery - there's always a risk that you won't come out of it, even though it's rare.

Yeah, you can only take so much of an animal's territory before it starts having to exist in yours.

I know. I have goats and used to use a vet to dehorn because we had little kids in the pens with us all the time, and just didn't need the risk. (Though in hindsight, I doubt we really needed to do that with Nigerian Dwarf's...little sweetlings.) Anywho, after losing one to anesthesia, we just decided to do it ourselves. It's the worst job, but everyone lived and didn't keep a grudge *thank goodness.*)

Cougars in urban areas are fairly common in my neck of the woods. My favourite incident is when a cougar wandered into the parkade of the Empress, the fancy/geriatric hotel in my home town. The palm court was in a flutter.

Someone even wrote a children's book about it.

The only "invasive wildlife" in a suburban community like this are the humans who live there. On the plus side, I guess that police officer's dick just got bigger, firing a handgun to protect innocent women and children from a ravenous beast, and whatnot.

Just find yourself a nice mall or school shooting and you can cease being a human if it pains you that much. Or find out what they gave the mountain lion. Might be quicker.
