I just want to profess great love for the paragraph beginning with, "In an email to Gawker management obtained by Gawker."

Well... interestingly, the email was distributed to Gawker Media’s tip-top-secret management listserv, which appears to be distributed exclusively to site and department leads (about one or two dozen people, I think). Emails from that listserv do not regularly leak, even within Gawker Media.

The most recent rumor coincides with Denton's return to daily operations at Gawker Media, following his wedding on May 31 and a three-week-long honeymoon...

Doesn't that time frame look a bit perfect? If you want to see who's spreading these rumors, start by checking the list of wedding guests.

Although probably it was an innocent comment at the wedding that turned into a game of telephone somewhere in media-land.

Dollars to donuts, someone drunkenly posited what it would take to shove Shep back into the closet, and some wag replied, "Murdoch buying Gawker."

Update! Today Nick Denton ridiculed recent rumors that Rupert Murdoch is buying his company. And yet the proprietor-king of Gawker Media confirmed that, in early 2006, a Fox executive approached him about the possibility of acquiring the then-four-year-old company.

“Really?” Denton said when asked about yesterday’s rumors, which two New York media reporters inquired about earlier this week. He added: “Do you know how many things we’ve written about Rupert Murdoch? Or Roger Ailes? It’s crazy.”

    “Gawker is unbuyable,” Denton said.

Denton addressed the rumors during a small lunch he held for gay Gawker employees on Thursday afternoon, at an Italian restaurant near his company’s Elizabeth Street loft. The day prior, Denton declined repeated requests to comment in Kinja, Gawker Media’s commenting platform, which he has otherwise encouraged staffers—and their sources—to use in the course of reporting.

But over ricotta ravioli and vegetarian pizza a little over an hour ago, Denton revealed that the rumors weren’t completely implausible: In 2006, he said, News Corporation’s Senior Vice President Jeremy Phillips—now managing director of Occam Partners—approached Denton about a potential acquisition.

“He said it was crazy!” Denton explained. “This was just after AOL bought Weblogs Inc. And it was crazy.”

Some months later, Businessweek hinted at, but did not confirm, talks between Denton and News Corp. Gawker itself called the Businessweek report “total bullshit.”

“I hang out sometimes with Jeremy Philips from News Corp,” Denton told Nikke Finke, “but the most he’s ever bought me is a drink.”

I'm cringing just thinking about the day when you guys finally sell out. And you will, eventually. Then it's on to a new favorite website. Then again, my previous favorite site, Buffalo Beast (Ian Murphy), was taken down by the Buffalo Police Department, in so many ways. The site's still up. Just unattended to. One way or another, everything good gets taken away. That's just something you learn the older you get in this country.

Secret is today the 1476th most popular app in America.

You just wrote a whole article about an anonymous post on an app that is downloaded by roughly 76 people a day. This is such a magnificent triumph of navel-gazing I can't even diss it.

    Bravo.

That seems astounding. But I still don't get the need to report Secret posts obsessively. How are anonymous posts on an app that has 758 daily users in North America newsworthy?

Based on the conversation I had with Nick this afternoon, he's not planning on selling Gawker anytime soon. He's in it for the long haul—until we change the world, basically.

If this does turn out to be true (which it probably isn't), I think Nick Denton will have you to thank for his big hypothetical payout. Maybe Roger Ailes has a thin skin about the excellent Shep Smith and Gregg Jarrett coverage. At first I thought you were being insensitive to Shep; the more I read your coverage, though, the more I come around to the notion that he's a genuinely interesting guy contractually locked inside a diamond closet. When the Shep Smith tell-all comes out in 2019, I will be first in line.

One other benefit of a potential sale: maybe Kinja could help breath some new life into MySpace.
