The Iraqi government has asked the US for help and why have we turned them down? This is truly a dire situation and they are clearly in an hour of need against a force that deserves to perish in a drone strike induced inferno, so why have we left them out to dry? Are we all of a sudden above intervention in Iraq even when it is just? The cost of inaction seems far worse at this point

I feel like the West fiddling with the Middle East is analogous to someone who has no idea what they're doing trying to delete programs from a computer. Inevitably, we come to an unfixable situation.

There is a better chance of aliens invading earth tomorrow than there is of Obama sending troops back to Iraq.

They are fundamentalists not extremists. Go look at places like Saudi Arabia where they have similar rules.. Sharia law is fairly clear for an ancient medieval code of conduct.

The group are described as "extremists" by nearly every news outlet I've read or heard coverage on. They were so extreme that they were kicked out of al Qaeda.

It's so jarring and disconcerting to see what's happened in such a short amount of time to Iraq and Afghanistan. Only 1 generation away from this (Baghdad, 1970s)

    and this (Afghanistan, 1960s):

      And Iran:

But also remember that these pictures depict mostly the upper class.

To generalize: during the British empire, most colonies had an upper class which copied British culture and attitudes (in addition, in many instances the upper class consisted of those who converted to Christianity and received British style education in order to obtain more social status and wealth) which continued on even after the independence (to be eventually called "uncle Tom's" by the rest of the country and denigrated as the majority ethnic/religious groups came into power). Remember that the British typically gave more privileged positions to ethnic and religious minorities as part of their divide-and-conquer plan.

This is so interesting- just goes to show that these restrictions on women have much more to do with radical conservatism with a Muslim flavor than Islam itself, since these people were not any less Muslim back in the 60s

I wonder if you asked the people of Iraq and they could answer honestly if they prefer their country before under Hussein or after post American reconstruction. Which they would choose. I truly do wonder this..... Cause both most likely have their Pros and Cons

THANK YOU so much for getting the name of the group right! If one more media article called ISIS the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, I was going to lose it!

It means 'the Levant', which is a larger area than the modern-day state of Syria. They have designs on territory outside of Syria and Iraq.

And this is why you do not interfere with countries, invade them based on lies, and dismantle the admitted monstrous regimes. Because while Hussein was certainly no angel, he and his vicious regime kept these assholes AT BAY.

Now, many, many more people will suffer due to Bush II AND this country who stupidly fell for the web of lies.
