I'll dispense with the whole "This isn't a real story" and "Frozen is better than most Disney movies" and whatever. Let me just ask folks, because, I can never seem to get a straight answer when my judging scowl blurts this question out in public:

Why do grown human beings without children watch Disney films? And I'm not talking about Pixar, which usually consist of actual plots and emotion and THOUGHTS. I'm talking about the manic, slapped-together showtunes bullshit that comes out in something like Frozen? I'll admit to liking a few of those things when I was kid - Lion King, Hunchback of Notre Dame (don't judge me, I won't judge you). But I recently was forced to watch this movie with another guy. And he sang all of goddamn songs and recited the dialogue in all the voices. It was creepy. Then when I bring this up to other people they damn near accuse me of being a communist. "No. Man. Disney is great!" Not as a guilty pleasure, but as a staple of American cinema.

Why? What possesses a nearing-30 individual to curl up into a ball and squeal with glee at the appearance of a talking snowman who has a song about not melting? I mean, I get it more if you just like musical theatre in general, but these are films made for kids. They are embarrassing to watch at times, contain all the humor of a Three Stooges routine without Curly and WITH Shemp and, with the exception of Frozen, all end the same goddamn way.

So please, tell me — what is it about Disney that has a hold over all of you? Or is it just that the Midwest has nothing better to do and accepts this as some sort of half-assed Broadway substitute?

I don't find it hard to believe. There's plenty of kids movies I've seen that work well with adults and have some of the winking humor to an older audience. That I get.

But I have friends who treat Disney like a cult. And when I'm like, "Well, they're not THAT good" I get that stink eye.

I'm not saying that it can't happen. I'm asking why people love it SOOOOOO much. I just want to understand.

Seriously, can someone explain this movie to me? I'm a single guy in his mid-twenties with no kids so I haven't seen this. All I know is there's a song called "Let It Go" and everyone is apparently obsessed with this movie.

What's the draw? Is it that good? I am not above movies aimed at younger demographics, but I just need to know if it's worth watching or not. From what I've gathered, there's a lot of singing. What's up with that?

It's actually a horrible movie that gets a huge pass (well, not from me) because:

      1. It's a musical, and the music isn't that terrible.

      2. It's a children's movie

      3. The movie ends in a moment of self sacrifice of one sister saving another sister from death. I've heard countless people say "It shows that a girl doesn't need a man to solve her problems."

Now, #3 sounds all swell and dandy, until you realize that the whole movie wouldn't have happened if the girl who gets the title of heroine was also the one who caused the whole situation to happen in the first place.

Also, if it wasn't for the tough and rough male character that helped the heroine in her quest and saved her life then there would be no movie.

Ultimately there is no character growth at all and the movie ends with more questions than it started with.

It's fine. Some cute characters, some incredibly earwormy songs, sightly more to the plot than most Disney films, lots of feel-good female empowerment (which I'm not trying to downplay, at all—I really appreciate that we finally got a Disney film that doesn't treat marriage as the pinnacle of acheivement for its heroine). It was a perfectly enjoyable watch (though I thought the snowman character was unbearably annoying, which puts me in a sad, lonely little group), but nothing I feel the need to watch twice, and the wild furor around it continues to confuse me.

I just watched Frozen last night. As an 80s baby and a reasonable fan of Disney movies...I was super disappointed. I mean, the music was good, and Olaf was cute, and I loved the message of sisterhood over misterhood and all that. But the character development was non-existant! There was no development of motivation at all. It felt like the whole movie was set up for Elsa to sing Let It Go...

-Why does Kristoff not have a family? Why did he never mention that he saw Elsa get the troll protection? Why did the trolls raise him? Speaking of the trolls....why were they randomly inserted into the plot and not utilized at all?

      - How did Olaf come to life? How did he get up to that mountain? Was he hanging out with Elsa the whole time or just wandering around without a nose?

-Why did the parents lock up both the daughters? Why not let Anna interact with people? Wasn't there like a 3 year gap between the parent deaths and Elsa's coronation? Who was running shit that whole time???

I know what you mean. I tend to point out that the Lion King is a terrible fucking movie with really good songs and excellent animation. The plot development is terrible. Aladdin has a far superior story.
