Setting aside the obvious snark from here in monarch-free America, can someone give a reason why this matters? If every single relative abdicated and the family goldfish picked up the title, would that materially change life in Spain in any way? Just curious.

Maybe not now, but I think the Spanish monarchy played a pretty important role in the restoration of democracy after Franco died in 1975. There is occasionally a modern-day purpose for hereditary monarchs to take a leadership role in modern state functions, especially when political government falls apart.

The right-wing fascists in Francoist Spain tried to set Juan Carlos up as an absolute monarch once Franco died, but once he became king he dismantled the Francoist state and helped transition Spain to democratic rule. He's been having troubles in recent years, so this abdication seems well-timed, but few people in this century have been placed in such a position of power and turned it down. If the new king can restore the monarchy's reputation, I think Juan Carlos I will be well-remembered. That is a tall order, unfortunately; Spain has a lot of problems.

The Huffington Post has been obsessed with Princess Letizia for years. Now that she'll be Queen, there will never be another day without her in their style section. (Considering what other royals look like, well, who am I to argue? Who will ever look at Charles and Camilla or even William and Kate if King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia are in the room?)

Had to be done: Juan Carlos has fallen off his pedestal lately.

Whereas Felipe is, you know, SMOKING HOT. Has integrity, I mean; has integrity.

Nah, Juan Carlos has his job because he kissed Franco's bottom, and then dismatled the dictatorship once Franco bit the dust. Plus a mysterious "gun accident" with his brother.
