So, Filthy Papists and other long-term popewatchers: Is this typical behavior of a pope, and we're just now paying attention because the internet loves Pope Francis, or are his interfaith efforts genuinely novel?

Personally (and I am no fan of either the Church or the Pope), I thought the most interesting part, which was hardly mentioned in English speaking media, is that he invited two of his close buddies from back in Argentina to pray with him: a Rabbi and a Muslim leader. The three hugged after their silent prayers and, apparently, they said "We did it", as if they had been planning event for a while.

I was at the Saint Louis Cathedral in New Orleans the other day. A Muslim couple, the woman in full hijab, walked in to view the Cathedral. I thought it was cool that they could walk into a church and appreciate it, if only for its beauty. It is the first time I witness a Muslim couple enter a church and I thought, "This is how I wish the world could be."

Did you mean Burqa (full body), niqab (veil that covers head and most of face) or Shayla (head and neck only)? BTW. Hijab is a generic term, but generally refers to a version of a Shayla (head and neck covering).

That's common for many tourist sites. There's a stream of westerners putting on a Shaylaw when going to the Blue Mosque. I've seen many muslims at historical sites like St Pauls in Rome, Notre Dame in Paris, etc.

Those aren't the people you need to worry about. The ones you worry about are those that refuse to go into another house of worship (from any religion). Those tend to be the intolerant ones.

It was full covering, top to bottom. I know some Christians also cover their heads when entering a church.

I would agree, but he's in a "Mr Smith Goes to Washington" situation. He has literally hundreds of years of history and policy to reshape- that won't happen overnight, or even during his reign(?). So unless there's another progressive pope, there will be a backslide into the 1920's (or whenever you feel the Catholic church is on the timeline).

Can't wait to see how this will be spun as both anti-Catholic and anti-Jewish by the fiercely anti-Semitic Obama supporters.

69% of Jews voted for Obama in the last election. They're fiercely anti-semitic? That's the "self-hating Jew" argument on a whole new level.

In case you haven't heard this one before...

A female CNN journalist heard about a very old Jewish man who had been going to the Western Wall to pray, twice a day, every day, for a long, long time.

So she went to check it out. She went to the Western Wall and there he was, walking slowly up to the holy site.

She watched him pray and after about 45 minutes, when he turned to leave, using a cane and moving very slowly, she approached him for an interview.

"Pardon me, sir, I'm Rebecca Smith from CNN. What's your name?"

      "Morris Feinberg," he replied.

"Sir, how long have you been coming to the Western Wall and praying?"

      "For about 60 years."

"60 years! That's amazing! What do you pray for?"

"I pray for peace between the Christians, Jews and the Muslims. I pray for all the wars and all the hatred to stop. I pray for all our children to grow up safely as responsible adults, and to love their fellow man."

"How do you feel after doing this for 60 years?"

"Like I'm talking to a fucking wall."
