I'm not sure that, "at a moments notice," is a great argument when we're talking about capital punishment.

There's also the problem of finding a team of marksmen who are genuine volunteers to participate in executions... which is problematic when it goes beyond talk and involves actually carrying it out. "Executioner" is not a job most people ever want to associate themselves with, including those who even support capital punishment.

To solve this problem, just strap the condemned with a mask of the likeness of the President. Next attach a copy of the ACA to their chest. You should have no shortage of doughy white men, politicians if I've heard correctly, ready to prove their manhood.

So I'm anti death penalty and this is more of an academic question. Wouldn't the most painless way to kill someone be to put them in an airtight space and essentially remove the oxygen? Don't they just fal asleep then die? Granted there are psychological effects to that style of death but from a physiological standpoint is it rather painless?

Yea, gradually pump in more nitrogen while venting out normal air and allow them to continue breathing, they would simply get more drowsy/retarded until dead.

Not to be insensitive, but I know my fair share of people who are great at sucking out the air out of a room. So... More jobs!

The death penalty is cruel and unusual, and if we're going to have it, it should look cruel and unusual. Injection has allowed people to think it's painless and humane. Capital punishment is barbaric and we should have to face that as a society every time a man or woman is executed.

For real. The inmate doesn't give a crap it's going to hurt, he cares he's going to die.

That reminds me, I haven't heard much about "compassionate conservatism" lately. Maybe even the right couldn't keep a straight face anymore.

You'd be denying the family an open-casket. Also, in a lot of gun and hunting enthusiast circles, head shots are frowned upon because of the association with poaching.

Although, if familial burial rights are to be disregarded, why not go all the way and have them be blown by the guns? Oh British India, it was the best of times and the worst of times. Also, yes, being facetious.

The messiness would force the state to confront the actual horror of the death penalty. I think they'd rather let the convicted suffer a bit more rather than experience an iota of moral discomfort.

Except for the problems of aiming and inmates moving that were pointed out. If you really want the most humane execution, a swift decapitation is the best bet.

The country is generally moving in the right direction (gay marriage, war on drugs). The Economist recently ran a piece showing how rapidly support for the death penalty is shrinking and how a majority of the 25< crowd believes it should be stopped. It's just that as the rest of the nation progresses the increasingly bitter, desperate holdouts pull harder in the opposite direction.

A firing squad would be quick and something we could do at a moment's notice

I'm at a loss with the bolded part. Executions in general don't happen at a moment's notice. There's a long appeals process, there's scheduling. What's he in the hurry about?

The MOST humane way to kill someone is to cram TNT up their asshole until it forms a fistula of explosives from their colon to their brain stem. Then you explode them from the inside out as their blood showers nearby family members.

Rectal explosives have a known failure rate, and dynamite fuses can burn out near the butt cheeks before detonating the explosives. The most humane way to do it is to put the rascal inside a basket, hog-tied, then catapult them into a wall using the technology we use to accelerate cars for crash tests.
