As a former Seattleite, I can tell those of you who aren't current-or-former Seattleites that Amazon is generally reviled in the city.

They give nothing to charity, the toxic corporate culture is well-known, and the usual refrain upon hearing someone has worked/is working at Amazon (I was never an employee) is, "oh, I'm sorry...such and such friend worked there and said it was awful."

Yup, I just had a close friend leave after a year. Even gave his signing bonus back because he couldn't stand it that much.

When you return a signing bonus, it's a pretty good indication of just how bad it is.

Jeff Bezos is a complete dick too. I was at a party (don't ask) on Mercer Island where he was at...and he had a whole gaggle of weird, Bezos-groupies around him.

A commenter here described him as "the guy whose entire body is shaved, with his dick in a little plastic cage, who sits in a corner and watches while some other man fucks his wife."

That was totally the vibe I got from him. Dude's into some weird shit, no doubt about it.

"Amazon's demonstrated success and explosive growth are indicative of our success in our corporate culture. It seems like this person wasn't cutting it."

You see, you need to remove the marketing handbook penis from your mouth so we take the message as coming from a human being rather than an office drone.

Everyone fucking hates office drones and the shit knuckles that sit there in 'brainstorming' sessions talking about how to be 'disruptive.'

I'm really surprised this guy didn't sign his name to that correspondence. It's basically tailor made to hand to his boss with the 'heh, I told them!" eyebrow.

    Right before he's fired.

Also, I believe this person has mild Aspergers but hides it well.

Um, hi my name is Alex Klivecka and I wrote that email. I'm not a "soulless robot" and I did sign my name to that email, Hamilton just didn't post it. I'm quite happy to own that comment. I may work in a corporate office, but I certainly don't look down upon anyone else who decides to follow a career path and work hard, whether they be an artist or a tradesman or whatever. Why do you hate on my career choice? I'm not telling you to come work here, I'm just trying to explain why some people don't make it here and provide a counter-point to that person's email so that people can get another perspective. I do cool work for a company that is doing cool things and yeah, in order to do anything meaningful with your life you need to work hard. Since you wanted some more info about me: I also play bluegrass banjo with a local Seattle band, I am an avid telemark skier and enjoy backcountry ski touring, and I have a vibrant and fulfilling life. One thing I wanted to point out is that you disparage Asperger's as if it's something to be looked down upon, which makes you sound like a real asshole. I do not have Asperger's, but so what if I did? Anyway, I love my company and my managers because I am challenged and excited about the work I do and that makes me happy, that's all. It's nice to have a job like that, I hope that you find the same happiness in your life.

The most interesting takeaway from all this is not what these Amazon employees disagree about, but rather the common threads that run through their descriptions of life at Amazon: a high pressure culture based on competitiveness, obsessive and ongoing measurement of employees, and a commitment to treating people as cogs in one massive, churning retail machine.

Now I am CONVINCED HamNo has no experience in corporate America. What % of large companies aren't "high pressure culture based on competitiveness, obsessive and ongoing measurement of employees, and a commitment to treating people as cogs in one massive, churning (whatever they do) machine"? I don't think it's wrong for companies to be unlike the Gawker conglomerate and have + keep track of expectations they place on their employees. This series is idiotic

The annoying point system for violating clock in and clock out procedure is there it protect the company form multi-million dollar wage/hour class action lawsuits. The policy regarding doctor's note is in place to mitigate the rampant effects of worker's comp/disability/LOA fraud.

I'm not sure I follow your line of reasoning of how a doctor's note is required to avert fraud for work comp, loa or disability.

If you're injured on the job, you'll notify your supervisor and be seen by a physician, and either be returned to full or limited duty or taken off duty for a certain amount of time - automatically a doctor's note is required.

For LOA (whether for a disability or to care for a family member), a doctor's note is required as well (by statute).

If you call in sick, there's generally a sick call policy that you can either self report, or as quite a few businesses do, require a note from a doctor to substantiate that.

having to bring in a doctor's note is something a school does to it's students. It's not something a business does to it's adult workers.

I've been a Prime subscriber since October and have had every month so far credited free to my account because a package showed up slightly past the 2-day window and I complained. I read about this loophole on LifeHacker, just confirming it works. Bitching works. *rolls in literal tens of dollars*

      *hides from shower of pennies*

(Haha I'll have to keep that trick in mind. My boyfriend has had free prime shipping for two years because they screwed up twice in his 30 day cancel window... and then mistakenly charged his card after he cancelled. Oops. He called to complain, they rolled back the charge and let him keep the service. He is just letting the free prime shipping roll on until someone says otherwise)

My Prime order is late. I was reading over the Amazon Prime "Guaranteed Accelerated Delivery Fine Print" (herehttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom…) and I know that it is Amazon's policy to extend Prime memberships by one month when shipping dates are not met. If this applies to my account, I would like my Prime membership to be credited forward an additional month. Thank you very much.

So far this has worked for me seven times in seven months. It can work for you too!

Seems this author no not you Hamilton is a bit of a "cant see the trees in the forest" type. Amazon stock trades at massive PE and because of that the company can get margins to amost zero. In my opinion it has nothing to do with "output oriented culture and everything to do with being loved by stock markets. It allows them to do whatever because they have tons of cash. The company should barely exist at this point.

Yeah it's amazing how easy it is to be successful when you don't have to worry about things like making a profit.

I keep thinking that after 20 fucking years investors would get tired of giving Amazon free money, but I guess not.

Looks like my 2009 complaint against Amazon is still online! Although I did leave out the part I was told later, as rumor, that Jeff Bezos is a customer of overseas underage sex tourism excursions. If anything, since 2009, the despicable practices of Amazon and systematic theft of it's vendors, third party sellers, customers, and looking the other way if counterfeit products offer up profit is now considerably worse:

Amazon.com is deliberately allowing partnered merchants to steal from individuals knowing that these merchants do this while at the same time stealing from Amazon sellers-those people naive enough to think they can sell anything through Amazon and actually receive any money for their items before Amazon blocks their accounts and steals their money.

In the former example Amazon.com lists approximately 500 Sony computers and related items for sale on their website-I only researched about ten of the very most expensive ones which sell for between $2200 and $4000. Several of those computers list the merchant as LC Way also known as viaousa.com They have already been reported here several times and yet they continue to be listed at Amazon.coms website. What has been reported is not pretty: The owner of LC Way, a guy with a name impossible to read let alone pronounce is an out and out thief and Amazon, being the thieves they are, know this. What has been reported here already is some customers have bought computers listed as new with parts removed and replaced with inferior parts, less than the promised working components, supposedly new computers arriving damaged. One example on the Amazon.com and viaousa.com website lists a top of the line AW 290 loaded with 8 GB of memory and a 2.93 GHZ processor for $2199. This is an absurd configuration first of all which would cost much more than this if ordered from the legitimate Sony Style website. Also it is a fact if you are stupid enough to order from this scumbag you will NOT receive those high end components as promised or even a new, undamaged computer. Also this piece of trash tries to claim he is a Sony Authorized Dealer (note the deliberately misleading viaousa.com - I would have never known who this scumbag is except he happened to post in a thread about the AW 290 series over at notebookreview.com bragging about low prices which got me researching this piece of trash and exposing him over there as I am now doing here and the scumbags at Amazon.com (and EBay) that continue to allow this criminal to operate. I'd really like to see what the scumbag Amazon.com employee who checks this page to write their usual full of lies rebuttals has to say about this dirtbag and the dirtbag Jeff Bezos at Amazon.com and all the other dirtbags at Amazon.com

In addition, Amazon.com owes my friend, Tamar Hirsch, a great deal of money for textbooks and other books and related materials she sold through Amazon.com who promptly confiscated her money and blocked her as a seller which they have done to tons of others who are honest merchants looking to sell materials through Amazon after having built false trust in their sleazebag operation. They owe her thousands of dollars.

I was considering ordering through Amazon for the first time in years for things like discounted BluRay discs and then I found out you pay a much higher price later on in the form of your card will be charged at a later date for items you never ordered-just one of many ways Amazon is committing fraud on a massive scale. Thankfully I never ordered anything through these dirtbags once I realized what they were really about and NEVER will. They owe Tamar thousands of dollars as it stands right now and I'm all for class action against Amazon and criminal prosecution of Jeff Bezos and anyone else under him perpetuating fraud on the public deliberately.
