Do crack pipes look like that? On Cops, they are a lot smaller.

Was gonna snark but then I remembered I was just having a debate with someone about how the biggest barrier to changing our corrosive and shitty war on drugs was the public viewing drugs as a criminal (see: moral) problem rather than a health problem.

Can't have it both ways - either he needs our help or he needs our scorn.

Without entirely discounting the factor of personal responsibility (and the fact that yes, he is a right-wing hypocritical demagogue) I think we need to ask ourselves - is this kind of pile-on the fuel that keeps the perpetual "war on drugs" running along unchanged? I think it is.

What a revolutionary act it would be if people spoke about relapse the same way they spoke about remission.

Is using serious substances like crack while the mayor of a major city not a moral problem, even for those with the most liberal views on drugs? No doubt there are many who would condemn it either way, but you see condemnation from all corners here because the ethical problem is so damn obvious. Since we're talking War on Drugs, a loose comparison to the ethical issue of using serious fuck-you-up drugs like crack (one of the very few which most of those liberal drug users would never consider touching) would be Nancy Reagan allegedly covering up her husbands worsening Alzheimer's during his second term. It isn't unethical to have Alzheimer's, clearly, it is simply a health issue. Holding public office and deceiving your electorate about your mental capacity is super fucking unethical.

And no, this doesn't have anything much to do with the quote War On Drugs endquote. That has more to do with locking up hoodrats and people of color. If Rob Ford were any other white collar idiot and not a very public figure, he could continue smoking crack, undisturbed by the police or the press until he dies of his inevitable heart attack.

I don't doubt that per se, but it's sort of besides my point. Using Ford as some kind of moral proxy for other social ills - while perpetuating the myth that drugs are a choice and not a health issue - has broader, pernicious effects.

Just because someone's an asshole doesn't mean we should mock him on this issue. Allow me to take my analogy a bit further. Let's take my least favorite politician, say Peter King and say he got cancer. I wouldn't deride him for this while saying "Yeah, but he's against more coverage for the poor and disenfranchised." har har har. I would say "Get well soon, this a terrible condition" and criticize him for all of his other shittiness. But that's neither the substance or tone of this conversation. It's sin-eaterism at its most base and vulgar.

I don't like to think too much about because I did it in five minutes, on an iPad, while pooping, from a photo ref. But yes, my linework really is that sloppy.

Offer to send the dealers to lunch at out-of-the-way NYC tourist restaurants with Caity and Rich. Problem solved! And they can add a new question to their "the best restaurant in New York City is" criteria: "Is this a good place to be shaken down by an opportunistic Canadian drug dealer?"

The Sun? Sure. But the Globe and Mail? If it really turns out the G&M paid for a story, most of middle-Canadian intellecutalism is going to have to have a serious time-out in the cottage to re-think things.

I was also surprised by that, given that the Star had first opportunity and sat on it for months with the last tape, as they have a policy against buying news. I assumed the Globe would have the same policy. However, I did notice that the linked story is coauthored by Robyn Doolittle, the Star's main reporter on Ford. It wouldn't shock me to learn that the 2 papers - and perhaps others as well- had a deal in place to collaborate and share the story if any new tapes emerged. Did they split the cost of the stills and pass on the tape?

Any stills that make it clear that he's smoking crack, and not weed? I don't know why I still find this slow motion train-wreck interesting, but I do.

John cook always ended his Rob Ford pieces by urging readers, "Don't smoke crack." Max Read has no such exhortation. Is Max Read pro-crack?
