Okay, I hate that I'm about to do this, but I really just feel like saying it. Pop music these days just isn't good. And I mean the top of the charts radio stuff we hear. I just think pop songs these days sound more bizarre than anything, unstructured, and trying too hard.

I watched the Avril Lavigne "Hello Kitty" music video this morning and not only is the video heinous but the song is just so terribly awful horrible shit.

Really? I guess it depends where you live. The pop station in ATX plays a lot of Lorde (who I love but I know she isn't everyone's cup of tea), some Mumford and Sons, Neon Trees, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Bastille. There was a month or 2 where "The Wire" by Haim was on a lot, which made me incredibly happy.

I'll admit I haven't ever really been a fan of the stuff that sounds like it was written by a computer. Also anything with Pitbull is pretty ugh (also, stop putting Pitbull in things- it's helping no one.) But saying all current pop music is terrible seems like it's painting with a really broad brush. There's a lot of good music coming out lately.

I wouldn't really consider Mumford and Songs, Neon Trees, etc "pop music." That's more in the ~*~indie~*~ atmosphere.

That said, you're right about it depending where you live. I live in Miami so its all computer club dance music all the time and I hate it.

I really wish that Lily Allen had never resurfaced. Worst fucking comeback ever.

It's making me sad. I really loved her post-music career tweets on pop culture and stuff too. She was very savvy.

She should have faded into obscurity with Kate Nash, although Kate Nash put on a night at the Hackney Empire where she and her band performed the Buffy musical episode "Once More With Feeling".

Look, Lily Allen literally gave the world a song about her brother, Theon Greyjoy, smoking weed and masturbating. She can do what she likes.

Except post an angry rant on her blog about people illegally downloading her music, then literally a few weeks later release an album which includes dozens of samples of other people's songs for which she did not have permission nor did she give credit. If a person did that, they'd have to disappear from public life for a few years until it all blew over and then make a big come back as if nothing had happened. Hypothetically*.

      *Not hypothetically at all.

I love her voice but this song is dogshit. Not a smart lyric in it. If you make your music from observing the world around you and the world around you has shrunk to the woman-cut-woman music industry, this is what you get, I suppose.

I don't like her but come on Jezebel she is not challenging them , if you actually did some research she insists that she's not calling them out , ""It's completely the opposite of that, though. I'm saying that I want all of them to be Sheezus, and I want to be Sheezus too."

I might have interpreted the lyrics wrong, but I thought the message of this was how utterly ridiculous it is that fans/media pit female artists against each other? stan wars and shade and whatnot? The period verse is a little awkwardly worded, but it's a hella lot more truthful than most other mainstream pop songs.

That's exactly how I interpreted it. I can see how it might be interpreted the opposite way though. Lily has done and said some fucked up shit since her re-emergence.

I agree, it's disappointing because she was such a huge role model for me in high school. But still, comparing her to that Avril Lavigne travesty isn't fair.

I'm with you. I don't feel like it's as good as her earlier work but I don't hate it. I certainly won't put it in the "Hello Kitty" category.

I'm out of outrage points today. I couldn't even get worked up at Avril Lavigne's vid. But if I hear Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty to Me" ever again, I might combust out of sheer annoyance.

I am not sure what the point of this, and your other recent article about Lily, is. It's not informative, and really only serves to communicate your dislike of her. Kind of disappointed that a feminist website would slag off a female solo artist for her interpretation of feminism.
