I always wonder about the Jews for Jesus. It's hard for me to imagine that their strategy can actually be all that effective — assuming that their goal is actually to interest Jews in Christianity.

If, on the other hand, their goal is really to make a buck attracting donations from moneyed Eeeevangelicals, they may be on to something. Years ago, my internship supervisor invited a J4J rep to come talk to his congregation. As I recall, the guy gave a mildly moving personal testimony, told a few jokes, and then passed out a catalog.

He was selling ... well, it's hard to describe. Tsotskes, I suppose, devised by taking the stuff you might find in a Jewish gift shop and combing it with the stuff you might find in Christian gift shop, assuming both shops were on the tacky side. So, "Kiddush cups" with the name of Jesus written on them, or menorahs with crosses. Stuff, in other words, that no Jew would ever want to own — but which would be touching for the sort of people who hold "Christian seders" this time of year.

Watching an Evangelical doing something which is culturally offensive, is a lot like when a two year old sticks its hand into its diaper, to see if there is a load down there. You can see by the look in their eye when they are about to do it. If you happen to be close by, and are compassionate, you may even reach out to try to stop them, before they raise a stink. But no matter how hard you try, they eventually are gonna get a handful of something. And they always seem surprised when they do.

Catholics used to pray for the conversion of the Jews on Good Friday, without fail, but it has been so long since I lapsed ... I was told that prayer had been removed from the Good Friday services. So these Jews for Jesus "Christians" aren't the most original bunch. As an aside, if you lapse as a Catholic, do you revert to Judaism? Just asking.

  Vatican II changed that. It was declared that there was no longer a need to convert the Jews and that the covenant with Israel had not been superseded by Christianity. It was removed from the liturty. B XVI put it back in the Latin version of the Mass, which was in direct violation of Vatican II. There should be a move to get Francis to remove it from there.

Jews for Jesus are weird-ass fuckers.

I used to be a parish administrator at a church, and our sexton was a full-on acolyte of Rush Limbaugh. He loves the "members of the tribe" for various reasons, but he rejected them.
