FYI, entering the username "gawker," returns a message stating "further instructions have been sent to your e-mail address."

LOL. Well, it didn’t last night. (I checked!) I guess someone registered under that name after this story was published.

Right. I registered "Gawker" as quickly as I could upon reading this article. You seem to have drawn the conclusion that if, say, someone registered the username "Organiztion X," it means somebody at Organization X nominated themselves for a Pulitzer. But I didn't have to submit anything for consideration to register the username "Gawker." It was as simple as creating a Kinja burner account.

Yes, that should have been obvious. Did I mention my abject moronic status? I just thought the photo without a caption, looking properly august in black and white like, with the intellectual heft of the beard and spectacles, denoted a much more famous face. Like Freud crossed with Marx.

Anyone here want to guess what BuzzFeed submitted to the Pulitzer committee? They have a lot of good stuff!

      Definitely this one: http://www.buzzfeed.com/djpeisner/the-…

They have bizarrely good long form content from time to time.

I don't see why this matters? It's not that different than having a label and registering and submitting records released for Grammy consideration. If BuzzFeed wants to submit an article that one of their employees wrote, why is that weird?

I think the essential context here is that the Pulitzers have long encouraged a culture of secrecy: About submissions, the judging process, the voting, etc. So while it’s not a “scandal,” it’s certainly interesting insofar as the vast majority of journalists and editors do not publicize the fact that they submitted anything to the Pulitzers. I think that information should be out in the open. Or perhaps the Pulitzers should switch to a MacArthur Fellowship model, where you can’t even apply for the prize itself.

It’s also tremendously odd that BuzzFeed will not say which articles it submitted. These are the stories BuzzFeed considers worthy of a Pulitzer, and yet they refuse to say which ones they are.

#1. This isn't a site glitch by any stretch of the imagination. Every site has some way of seeing whether or not a username is taken.

#2. Just because a username is registered doesn't mean that they submitted something for themselves, their organization, or even submitted anything at all.

#3. Entering a username other than your own, with intent to exceed your authorized access (access a list of usernames, in a roundabout way) may constitute computer hacking, if the Pulitzer prize institute cared. http://definitions.uslegal.com/c/computer-hac…

Oh wait, they don't care about Gawker.

      1. Right. It’s more of a hidden feature.

      2. That’s why I confirmed it with BuzzFeed and the Daily Beast!

      3. No.

      4. We didn’t submit anything!

I've been in publishing going on 20 years now, and it's been my experience that you don't get professional awards unless you enter your work yourself.

I suppose the Pulitzer is a bit different, but it's not like this is anything remarkable from where I'm sitting.

You don’t think it’s remarkable that BuzzFeed refuses to say which stories it thought were capable of winning a Pulitzer?

I spent 30 years in newspapers and almost every year we nominated ourselves for several. It's pretty standard practice in newspapering.
