It seems strange that, in 2014, a radio station would object so much to an incredibly sanitized word for a woman's monthly bloodletting that they wouldn't play a song on the radio.

Surely it's occurred to you that the infamous gobshite Lily Allen might be lying about her songs being too hot for radio? Do we know she's tried and been rejected, or is this record label hype? I can't see anything in the Guardian article or the Rolling Stone interview that backs up this claim. Just a pre-emptive assertion that the word "period" is "offensive to people", and some very vague noises about being too extreme for radio. I strongly suspect both things are nonsense, and she is simply having a hard time sustaining her career at this moment in time.

The fact that she named her album 'Sheezus', clearly trying to imitate, and or mock Yeezus makes me side eye the fuck out of her.

It doesn't sound like she's being serious in that second paragraph. It's hard to believe a radio won't play a song because of the word "period." It's probably not catchy. We'll see when the album comes out.

I don't know. Radio in the UK is pretty weird. On "Not Fair", they'd bleep out "wet spot". I understand bleeping out "giving head" etc., but "wet spot"?

Maybe they are weird about bodily fluids.

That could just as easily be the record label though. The radio itself doesn't often edit tracks, since that takes time and attention. They would much rather just play the radio edit they're given, and the label might just take that phrase out to maximise the chance of the track getting played.

Even Radio 4, the most straight-laced channel of the lot, doesn't bother censoring people saying mild words like "shit" on its radio drama and comedy during the daytime, so I can't see them giving a monkey's about "wet spot" on Radio 1 (although I can't vouch for that since I don't often listen to R1 in the daytime). Radio 6 is definitely broadcasting much edgier things than that on its morning shows though.

I choose to believe that Lily Allen takes great pleasure in trolling us - the public.

Because the alternative is ... well ... <sighs>
