I love how actors can take roles as serial killers, rapists, child molesters, but anti-union activists? Hold up!

I also think it's interesting that she says it's within their rights. Not sure about American laws, but in Canada, there are laws against suggesting to employees that their working conditions could get worse with a union- it is considered a threat.

You think that films and shows portraying serial killers, rapists, and child molesters are literally promoting and encouraging that behavior? You can't see the difference between this and that?

Full disclosure: I haven't seen the video, but I would guess that these two actors don't come out and say, "We're actors and we don't necessarily support the information in this video." When actors play serial killers, rapist, child molesters, etc. most folks know they are only acting.

Yeah I don't really see the big deal. They were actors doing a job. I don't really think Ed Norton wants to smash black people's jaws on curbs or that Chris Hemsworth can fly with a magic hammer either... EDIT: Also to head off the obviously coming "but those are examples of fiction and not promoting a viewpoint" comments, I would add that I also don't believe the Ron Popeil guy couldn't actually open a carton of milk or that every celebrity endorsing a product (or actor in a product's commercial) actively uses that product. If your argument is that all commercialism is bad, fine, I can get behind that. But if you're cool with an actor selling shitty hamburgers that make people fat and dead, but not selling an anti-union stance (again, as an ACTOR in a COMMERCIAL) then that's pretty hypocritical...

And I don't think Norton and Hemsworth we're filming a training video for a company that advocates jaw smashing and hammer flying.

I'm a big fan of Dawn Brody. She should quit acting and become a PR rep who helps people figure out how to respond to media inquiries without sounding like idiots.

I like Dawn Brodey's response, and I buy what she is selling, and I don't think less of her for separating what she does for a living (acting) from the roles she portrays in the execution of an acting job (in this instance, anti union red shirt wearing person).

Where is Hamilton's expose' on Ralph Fiennes playing a Nazi in "Schindler's List" or demanding Heath Ledger's posthumus Oscar be ripped away from the hands of his daughter because he played a sociopath? These are a bunch of no body, never will be actors trying to make a buck, what's with the vitriol? Should we examine the resume's of all Gawker writers to see if they ever took a gig writing on the wrong side of whatever idelogical fence Gawker is on?

Fiction films and blog posts are not generally considered to be the same category as political propaganda.

Now, if Schindler's List was filmed as a training video for prison guards, and guards-in-training were forced to watch and told to emulate Amon Goeth, then yes, Ralph Fiennes would have some explaining to do.

in that case, every ad copywriter should have their lives examined by Hamilton on Gawker and shamed for trying to earn a living. In fact, Hamilton should write an expose' on the "sponsored posts" that pop up on Gawker that encourage people to eat crap like Pringles

My problem with the actors' participation in the Target video is that it's shot in a way that implies that they are actual company employees. The message is "we're your colleagues and we're giving you our opinions" (whether those opinions are bullshit, biased, whatever). With a movie or TV show there is a clear understanding that the story is fiction or that actors are being paid to participate in the recreation of an actual event.

This just seemed dishonest to me. I don't really blame the actors — Target should be required to specify that the people in their videos are paid performers and not Target "team members."

Target is hellish, I worked the back room many years ago and was forced out because a co worker must have been threatened by me being a good employee. I think, because there was no other explanation.

I did everything right, but the boss began saying "people" were saying I wasn't doing my job/was doing a bad job, so she began putting crazy restrictions on me. We had "errors" for the "pulls" and I had less than anyone, but she told me unless I got ZERO (no one else had to) I'd be forced to leave the back room.

I got zero and she called me into the office, and told me I was being written up and being sent to work the floor. I almost flipped the desk and smashed her in her face I was so pissed. I did what she said, and she still just went ahead and tossed me out based on nothing but this douche bag lying about me. She never saw me do anything wrong, just believed everything her lackey said.

Then once when I got a job application for a Macy's, another boss reamed me out for daring to have that in the store.

Fuck Target. Fuck Best Buy, fuck Wal-Mart. Fuck all of them. They're almost uniformly awful.

I knew someone who got tossed out of Wal-Mart for something sketchy as well. They had a gross coworker that said something sexist and their boss basically got on their case because they didn't clean out some oven they used for cooking chicken (I think, from what they told me, the part that needed cleaning would get really hot and if they had cleaned it, it would have burned their hand). And it was all because they overheard this person use a curse word.

Are you working at Macys now? How are you liking it?

I don't understand why people hate actors for their characters, either these two or Lena Dunham. (Yes I said it.) Actors are paid to pretend to be people they're not really, whose characters say and do things that the real-life person would never say or do. It's concerning when people over the age of, say, 7, forget this. I'm glad they got paid well for this film (even if the contents suck) and were able to add it to their resumes.
