Why do white people think Chief Keef and all this stupid bullshit is cool, exactly?

Some of the music is quite good. Some of the music is half-baked. America loves violence.

Pretty sure it isn't the white people you need to be concern about glamorizing this shit.

I'm from this part of the world. Please throw this guy away. Go to school or something.

The LAST THING the northern burbs of Chicago need is gun violence glorification.

We had Laurie Dann (google her). This was a good 10 years before Columbine.

    ...we're hipsters like that.

And I'm from Englewood (luckily to have gotten out of there). All that's known to these "kids" is gangs and the glorification of crime. Selling drugs is the best way for most of them to make money. Be in a gang or be shot by a gang. It's hard from someone in the northern suburbs to view this perspective.

I just question the wisdom of putting all this out there. And then doing that in Northfield. We don't need trust fund "wiggers" (sorry— an actual term from my youth) carrying around guns. Trust me.

"But the media ecosystem that publicized and vilified N.W.A in 1988 is a backyard pond compared to the thick viral swamp that Chief Keef, King Louie, Lil Durk, Lil Reese, and Fredo Santana have traversed from their parents and guardians' basements."

You can't be serious. Rap artists were still fighting censorship battles back then. They were being protested. And then everybody who changed the landscape of art and culture got fucked out of their money.

The only thing "viral" these kids are dealing with is the marketing campaigns. The "media ecosystem" is fawning all over these dudes, and they flash more cash in videos than Cube made in his entire NWA career. However rough Chicago is, these dudes have it exponentially easier than their predecessors when it comes to the business and media.

Add to it that it was pretty obvious if you looked closely that N.W.A was an act. I was a record buyer for a major retailer back then and was familiar with World Class Wreking crew before them. Easy E had a hell of a time breaking into the East Coast territory and Dre wanted to be an R&B artist. Kurt Loder interviewed Ice Cube and O'Shea could barely stay in character driving a Suzuki sidekick. He came from a good home and his parents especially his dad were always in his life. I personally hated seeing them get so big and white people ate their shit up assuming they now "know" Black life. No mention in this article about how much most African Americans despise Chief Keef. His music, his behavior and his appearance. No mention of how fucked up his family is and how basically these kids raise themselves. Many Black blogs make their clicks criticizing that idiot. Interscope and Def Jam seal the horrible deal by giving these dudes huge advances and inspiring more teens to do little to nothing with their lives. They also take that cash and flip drug and buy more guns. It's really too bad Jimmy Iovine can't get shot for once instead of some child in Chicago. He's as much to blame for this bullshit as anyone backing Chief Keef instead of some kid from the South Side desperate for a STEM degree and a way to survive somewhere civil.

Boom. Yep, basically pre-Death Row, nobody had any reason to believe that they would get rich talking crazy shit. Once that changed... *sigh*

And one thing you kinda touched on there was another point I was tempted to make- it's not like Common is super duper OG, but there's a reason the author couldn't reference anybody earlier, and it's because nobody gave a shit about artists who weren't from NY or LA up through the mid-90's, I guess until OutKast smashed that bullshit. Labels wouldn't touch anybody. Some college buddies put out a now-classic EP, and I think Deion Sanders released two fucking albums between the time they finished recording it and were able to release it- independently, because that was the only choice they had.

So to even suggest that a bunch of teenagers cashing big checks off a niche scene in Chicago have it rougher in the biz than heads in the 80's is absolutely insane.

The Black Disciples aren't some massive gang horde. Talk to anyone who's been around here a while and you'll learn that when the OG leaders were locked up, the big gangs fractured. Ganglife here is now characterized by nihilistic groups of kids who own a few blocks before the next set's territory sets in. The older guys lament the lack of a code.

Maybe I'm just getting older, but the thing that irks me about Drill is that a lot of these kids aren't just talking or blasting other people in the life.

They're little nihilists whose judgment centers of the brain aren't even fully formed yet.

Lil Reese beat the shit out of a girl who asked him to leave his house.

Rondo Numba Nine was recently charged with shooting a fucking cab driver who was just sitting there minding his own business. His mom produces "Baby Savage" shirts.

Somehow, I was expecting to see this guy:

Hey Chicago, Jacques Chirac says, "Ay!"...

...and advises, now, more than ever:

The art doesn't seem to be the problem here. The problem seems to be that white people will happily exploit Black teenagers for cash and their own amusement.

I'd like to add "Chitown". We're Chicago. Jesus.

The other day on my FB feed I saw someone really fuck it up and post something along the lines of "Glad you had fun in ShyTown". :cringe::

It's ridiculous, and i'd say insulting to soldiers who've served in Iraq. Then of course national media picks it up and all of a sudden everyone thinks Chicago is one vast battleground.

It's Illinois's version of the Class B felony. Could also represent Class A.
