So what's the story with these t-shirts? Is there a joke or a pun in Chinese there? Or is it just completely random juxtaposition?

Americans buy them because they think it is funny to know nothing about history. That is the only reason these shirts exist.

$60 for a t-shirt is the boldest hustle I have ever seen in China. I have gotten a well made custom suit for $100.

It's not that unexpected as a starting price for a foreign journalist looking at an item that was being made into a big deal.

To demonstrate my point and do some bragging at the same time, I haggled some tschotske to 10% of it's starting price near the Great Wall as a third-grader in the 90's.

It is simply bizarre that people think of Obama as a socialist in general. In actuality, Obama is not much different than his 2012 opponent, Romney, in that he is a slightly left-leaning centrist rather than a slightly right-leaning centrist. Furthermore, Obama his spent less that his recent predecessors, but since these things are contrary to the narrative we collectively have, they get ignored.

Well, he did have the audacity to say that people in one of the richest country in the world (i.e. the USA) should not die because they have no health care. That is pretty un-'Murican. Which = communist.

Well, they still can die, but if they choose to go the hard way, they have to pay a tax penalty. SOCIALISM!

(Btw, "nudge" by "avowed socialist czar" cass sunstein is a great illustration of Obama's governing philosophy. It's like brighter Gladwell)

It was a long journey for us all. We arrived in China not knowing what to expect, and left the country not knowing what we experienced. But the Mao shirt I purchased is exactly what I wanted. $9.95, available in red or blue.

$60 for a shirt off the street in China? Heh heh. NOPE. Sorry, didn't happen. Even the foreigner prices for HEY NICE LADY wouldn't be over 150 yuan.

That wasn't the shirt's going price — it was the "I'm selling contraband to a foreign, white reporter despite heavy Chinese and U.S. security presence and an explicit directive against selling this shirt" price.

So, presumably US tourists (citizens of a democracy) go to a totalitarian state and buy shirts that are like "LOL our democratically elected president is a totalitarian!!!! Get it??? LULZ" from citizens of a totalitarian state . . . No wonder people hate us.
