I'll never understand why children stand trial as adults. It seems so arbitrary. At the end of the day this is still a 14 year old kid who can't vote, buy alcohol/cigarettes, get a driver's license or legally consent to sex. Whatever he did is pointless, he's still a 14 year old.

And if he had missed with every shot, he'd be tried as a juvenile. It's the flight path of the bullet that made him an adult, not his actions.

We have such a weird justice system.

A man is dead because of this kid. This kid took a life. He made a pretty " adult " choice by shooting that gun, and he should be tried accordingly.

See, I think pulling the trigger, regardless of the target/hit/miss, should be grounds for trying him as an adult. The point at which he aimed and pulled that trigger was the difference between a child and a mature mind. Attempted murder?

a child demonstrates that he is too immature and under socialized to fully understand the consequences of his actions, so we brand him an adult and declare that he is more responsible for his actions than his peers?

well, i guess we shouldn't let biology and psychology get in the way of our need for vengeance ... cuz vengeance brings the dead back to life, right?

No, society reasonably expects 14 year olds to understand some basic things - don't kill people is one of them. You don't gave to understand the full range of things a 50 year understand in order to understand that murder is wrong. An adolescent 's brain may be not fully formed but it is fully formed enough to comprehend that murder is wrong.

understanding that murder is wrong is not enough

this kid thought he was taking out another bad guy, and just as teenagers think that they are invincible, this kid may have been under the delusion that he could surgically shoot at his gang rival in a crowded bus

and no matter how mature was his ability to foresee the effects of his actions, he is not mature enough at 14 to effectively participate in his defense

Why do we allow gangs to exist? Is it just to perpetuate the 'justice' system? Because I think we could purge all of them from this country fairly easily.

Because there are a significant number of citizens and politicians that are opposed to social justice and keep them looking like a good option for disadvantaged youth.

15% of the population commits 53% of the violent crime in this country. I know that fact inconveniences white guilt liberals but until we stop accepting that this violence is normal and stop blaming white people, racism, the Civil War for this and start blaming thug culture, it'll ever change. Notice how Sharpton won't have a march for this but if a white cop tackles a fare jumper, he marches like it's 1962.

Yet it seems like you are blaming black people. And I'd bet a good sum of money that you have participated in fair share of violence and destruction.

The US only makes up 5% of the world's population but owns 50% of the gun supply. When are we going to start blaming accessibility and not this "thug" culture that seems to be the talking point as of late.

Hmmm, where is Al Sharpton and the NAACP protesting against gun violence? Where are the black special interest groups clamoring for more responsibility and accountability in their neighborhoods? Oh right: they're quiet now because they can't be seen to criticize a black teenager for murder. It would hurt their Trayvon fundraising.

Are you trying to say that the NAACP is full of hypocrites? Go figure. It's much easier to blame guns, white people, and the justice system than look inward and blame your own community.

The NAACP has provided a valuable and much needed service for a long time but it's morphed into a group that excuses all crimes committed by black people, that never criticized inner city violent culture, that blames all ills on white people or the police. They try to stay relevant by making a whole class of people always feel like they're victims when they're not and they try to stay relevant by acting like this is America in 1965. Remember; minorities are never, ever to be held accountable for their actions because it's always white people or conservatives fault.

RIGHT? This makes me so angry. It is as if somehow the horribleness of the crime, or the likeableness of the victim makes this kid older than 14 years old.

Ostensibly it's to prevent "boys being boys" from ruining your life with a felony charge. So if you do something dumb but not heinous, you get a bit of a slap on the wrist and hopefully turn shit around.

Do something like shoot a guy in the head because you're trying to kill a rival gang member and they ignore the slap-on-the-wrist part and you go to juvie until you're 18, and then straight to prison for the rest of your sentence.

Our justice system SUCKS, but it isn't really that crazy of a thing to try him as an adult.

Nah; he'll get out because the liberal justice system will consider him a victim of racism, discrimination, blah, blah, blah and he'll find Allah in prison so liberals will want to raise money to get him out of jail. Already, people on this board are claiming he's just a kid and didn't know better and maybe if we had a better social safety net, this wouldn't have happened. Yes, because it's everyone's fault but his.
