"When you marry an African woman, she must know the second one is on the way and a third wife…this is Africa," one member of parliament said.

I'd just like to point out the irony of this — people very often get into a tiff because folks refer to Africa, writ large, like it's all one culture/nation/what have you. And it makes sense to call bullshit on that I suppose (though I think sometimes it can go overboard, and/or there are some generalizations that can be made about the continent as a whole, even if the same cannot be said about the people living there) — it's a diverse place. But with that in mind, here's a Kenyan politician making sweeping remarks about "African women" and "Africa".

Two very different phenomena. Remember that the boundaries between different African nations are generally colonial in nature.

But women from Cape Town to Cairo are African women so surely can't be included in one general sweeping statement about culture by anyone, regardless of whether the speaker is African. Was polygamy traditionally practiced on the entire continent (genuinely asking - it's not a topic I have much knowledge of)?

". . .without the knowledge or consent of his original partner(s)."

Jesus Christ that is effed up. I don't give a damn about polygamy, but to not even TELL your wife you're bringing home another spouse?

Props to the woman in the video above at the two-minute mark for calling it like she sees it. "What I see are men who are insecure, who are chauvinistic. . ."

How long before the tabloids claim Beyoncé is leaving Jay-Z for to be Obama's Kenyan second wife?

In November, the Kenyan parliament voted against a bill that would have given a woman divorcing her husband half of her family's assets; according to the BBC, they settled at 30%.

      Man, F that noise.

An acquaintance of mine used to practice law as a divorce attorney in Texas in the late 90s (primarily taking male clients), and there are some shady ass laws there to protect a dude's interests. It's been awhile, but iirc, there are certain assets that are untouchable in a divorce. Things like guns, horses, etc... He would have his clients go out and buy as much as this stuff as possible, then sell it off some time after the divorce.

"Other laws that have been debated recently concern bride prices and whether a minimum age for marriage should be implemented."

These people are practicing outright slavery. The men are, anyway, and practicing it on the women.

When the country's new constitution was written in 2010, it included a rule that required a certain number of seats in the government be held by women.

I would be pretty shocked if this fact and the thrust of this article were not absolutely linked. Reactionary politics, dudes...

One candlestick will hold many candles.

A candle is melted to a puddle after filling a single candlestick.

Polyandry really does make more sense.

But consider this. You would have to clean up after four or five men.
