The wage theft issues (obviously wrong) aside, about this:

Other suits challenge Mcdonald's practice of making working purchase and pay to clean their own uniforms.

How is that not kosher? Any job with a dress code doesn't give you your clothing and pay for you to clean your clothing. Why is it suit-worthy that MacDonalds makes you buy your own clothes and clean them?

Because it's probably tough to wear a McDonald's polo at any other employer?

It varies in States/countries, but if you're required to wear something specific, your employer is supposed to pay for it, or reimburse you in some way. A l0t of companies have loopholes to get around it though.

The existence of wage theft is pretty uncontroversial in places like this- but much like the Blue Line of Silence beloved of our police force it lies at a convergence of being transparently obvious in its working and almost impossible to definitively prove barring massive incompetence by the perpetrator.

Whoops, turns out the manager put down the wrong hours for you for a while, he's honestly very sorry and it won't happen again, in unrelated news you will very shortly be fired. The reasons will be vague, uncontestable, and have nothing to do whatsoever with the fact you just raised a complaint.

Pretty much. You took a sick day? Sorry we're only able to schedule you for 15 hours next week, you know the economy and all. Nothing to do with your insolence you dirty peasant.

I'm always happy to hear from campus activists who have never held a job about the way they think the world works. In reality, most big companies are scared so shitless of a lawsuit like this that they are obsessed with making sure every minute of work is properly documented. Most mid-level managers spend a good deal of their day fixing time cards and doing other sorts of labor law compliance like scheduling lunches, including fighting with employees who would rather get paid for the extra half hour but are legally required to take a half-hour lunch in most states. At the average corporation, if someone works off the clock, he, his manager, and any coworkers who knew about it and don't speak up will be fired, the first time, with no warning.

This isn't to say that there aren't companies that flout this law (Wal-Mart being notorious in some areas for it, and I'm not saying this particular McDonalds isn't guilty of what they are accused of). But on the whole, the reality is this is ALREADY illegal, and most companies, regardless of their lack of moral feeling about their employees, don't want to pay fines or have anyone go to prison, so they are paranoid about regulatory compliance.

How about people serving overseas in combat? they work way more hours, and when you factor in their pay, are definitely making less than minimum wage.

factor in the benefits and they're kicking the ass of pretty much anyone who doesn't work on wall street

no other job in America includes all food, housing, transportation, and health care as freebies. minimum wage isn't much, but it goes a hell of a lot farther when all it has to cover is your entertainment budget.

why do you think car dealerships near military bases do such ridiculously good business?

Where's the inevitable troll post about how these people should just "work harder" and that "these jobs aren't supposed to be comfortable"? I'm both saddened by corporate sycophants and usually happy to see them get smacked down.

    Let's get this over-with.

I understand the lawsuit and support it. I think the only thing I can't understand is the washing of the uniforms part. If McDonald's sends them out with a say, Cintas, to get cleaned, then yeah, that's pretty messed up to make them pay to get their own uniforms washed. But I'm curious to know if it's because they have to wash their own uniforms at home.

It's 2014 and most of the boring, repetitive, low-skill jobs have been replaced by automated robots. Why is McDonald's still even employing anyone? I'm pretty sure a robot can microwave a machine-made burger, put it on a bun, squirt on some ketchup and shove it in a box.

Actually, manipulating irregularly sized and floppy organic materials is a difficult job for a robot to accomplish.

The only way for McDonalds to fully automate their staff would be to streamline their menu, and make their food look, well, less like food. Think cubical hamburgers.

Humans are cheaper than robots, for now.

My thought on unions: corporate america has their legions of law firms, lobbyists and politicians working hard on their part to keep wages down, and benefits nil. So I think it's only fair workers have someone representing them.
