I'm so glad they brought the hammer down. All that insider trading, and they didn't have the basic decency to be secretive about it. This kind of explicit corruption is just the sort of thing that could derail some good, honest financial deregulation. His greed is going to hurt a lot of money managers' wallets. I'm surprised he didn't get the death penalty for that.

Whereas I think the death penalty part might be a little extreme, I am inclined to agree with you to a certain extent. As someone who works in finance, this kind of stuff makes me furious. We all take an ethics class before we graduate, whether that be undergrad or graduate. Not all of us are capital scum, but with all of these guys floating around, one would sure think so.

Not sure if you're serious, but I'd be all for the death penalty strictly for deterrence purposes. Next time you're considering insider trading, weigh the expected value of an extra million dollars vs. the firing squad. Problem solved!

(also, unlike rape or murder, insider trading is probably easier to prove)

Related: There's always a discussion being had about white collar crime, and how the authorities generally suck at prosecuting it, but I thought the sentence that this guy got a few days ago was - dare I say - borderline excessive:

This guy is looking at 20-30yrs, for defrauding investors of $2m. In the scheme of things, that's peanuts...but he's going to do a lot more time than a whole army of other ex-traders who caused a lot more damage, including any of these guys implicated in wrongdoing from SAC (or Diamondback, or Level Global...)

The fact that we locked up Martha Stewart for insider trading but not Steven Cohen, whose company did it for over a decade, really raises some interesting questions about our justice system.

She was jailed for obscuring evidence and trying to derail the investigation of her insider trading...not the trading per se. If the investigation had proceeded, she would have faced a simple fine.
