This seems to be a. . .thing with European fashion folks. Or do we just hear about it more than American designers and magazines doing the same sort of thing?

You don't understand. The model is Dutch, it's totally A-OK when Dutch people do this because they're super enlightened and they're just so past all that.

(A real argument I've actually seen used in all seriousness.)

Fashion folks can be just plain weird. I am European and I think this is pretty high on the Derek Zoolander scale of farcical. . My wife is Irish, ethnically Indian, and works in fashion. Some really strange things do down in Italy in particular. She has some weird stories from the US too though.

Wow. This is mind-bendingly insulting to people on at least three continents.

Also not helping? Wilson/HuffPo's pondering of "...why they didn't just use a black model in the first place."

BECAUSE BLACK MODELS SHOULDN'T JUST GET TROTTED OUT FOR TRIBAL/VAGUELY AFRICAN FASHION SPREADS!

On a far, far lesser note: I don't get the appeal of shoots that are styled like this. I'm not even sure what these garments are that I'm looking at. Is "one sleeve on, one bewb out" really going to be big this season or something (see shot next to title page, I think she just has half of the top on)?!

So if you can't shoot tribal pictures with black models...and you can't shoot them with non-black models, who can you shoot with? Or are you saying that it is never okay to shoot tribal photo shoots? Or are you saying that it's only okay to shoot tribal photo shoots if a person is actually a tribal member? It must be one of these, because it has to be okay for SOMEONE to take tribal pictures.

Re: your last point- I agree that this is just a really unattractive pictorial that doesn't do any of the clothing any favors. The horribly offensive art direction is the biggest problem, but it's also just really ugly. The model is making strange faces, the poses & styling obscure what are probably some very beautiful clothing, the face paint looks like this year's version of Johnny Depp's Tonto (BTW, off topic- did anyone notice that The Lone Ranger was nominated for Best Makeup Oscar??? Unbelievable). Total fashion & racist fail.

Help me understand here—is Wilson suggesting that using a black model would make this not crazy racist? Because I don't know if a black model could save a shoot that employs uninformed, inspecific "tribeswoman chic" conceived by a white dude from "really pretty racist" territory, but perhaps I'm missing something?

I read a really good interview with Alek Wek and her experiences when she first started modelling. Aside from the lies that she was discovered sitting in a tree or gathering water or whatever it was (she was discovered while shopping on Crystal Palace High Street), she said that she refused lots of work because it involved her being surrounded by animal print and various tribal shit.

No, no, no. You're like, totally taking her comments out of context. See, she's just saying that Blacks are African (duh!) so, you know, then it's okay!

(Yes, that is sarcasm. Hold me, LaC.)

So two things: having spent far too much time in southern Europe (Spain, Italy, etc) I have no qualms at all about saying that Italians are just racist as fuck. More than the Spanish, and that's saying something. I'm not even surprised by this.

Second, while the headline is technically accurate, it's also a bit misleading. I have a feeling this ish wasn't exactly the model's idea. Some idiot had to come up with this stuff, she's just picking up her paycheck. Would be nice if she'd had the wherewithal to question it, but when your career is entirely based on your willingness to unquestioningly pose for tacky, idiotic photos in ugly clothes, I guess you don't get to say no.

Are they really that racist? Serious question :-/. I'm going on a European cruise for my 26th birthday, and im stopping in both Italy and Spain. I went to both places when I was 12 and don't remember any racism though I am a golden brown color. I was also young and naive to racism at the time, so that can also account for this.

Not in the 'let's go up to that random person and shout the n-word at them' way. The cultures are just casually racist. Making "chinese" eyes is popular, and I often see children point at dark-skinned people and giggle "negrrrrrrroooooo" into their hand. I guess Spain and Italy are no more racist than the US, but in the US most people keep their thoughts to themselves. In the parts of Europe I've lived in people just...say...exactly what they're thinking. Young people are the worst offenders, especially little kids. You'll be absolutely fine as a tourist, honestly. It's just after living here for years that it's really started to grate on me, and reading the papers and listening to conversations in bars here has made me much more aware to how straight up nasty racist some people here are. It usually manifests as anti-immigrant commentary.

Very serious advice though, hold on to your personal belongings on your trip. Certain areas of Spain (Barcelona and Madrid especially) are known as the pickpocketing capitals of the world. You'll be a target the second that cruise ship docks in a harbor. Theft is a *huge* problem here, especially at the hands of Roma children. Keep a sharp eye out. (And enjoy your trip!)

I can barely look at it because it looks like the picture a hunter takes after killing a big animal as a "prize," and the animal is slumped over like a big blob of dead and the hunter is like "Victory!" Why are the animals piled on top of each other? Gives me a sad :(

Jezebel actually covered this a few months ago. The model interviewed basically said that most models put up with messed up photo-shoots, lest they be considered "hard to work with." Once a model is labeled "hard to work with" it's hard to get jobs. If you ever run into a model, you can ask. I did and she confirmed it. The modeling industry is a terrible thing.
