      As a former State of Ohio employee, something like that isn't too hard to have happen. I set up a new Windows server, ran out of time to install the service pack and the other updates, and went home for the weekend.

      Monday comes around, and nobody can get out of our local network to the Internet. Our T1 connection is saturated.

      Somebody has found my server, started the FTP service, and loaded about 800 megabytes of warez. Which was a bit of a joke, as most of it was Usenet parts that had missing parts. I tried turning FTP off, but the traffic still seeking the server was too much. So I unplugged the server, changed the address so that I could get back on the network without dealing with the FTP traffic and got it updated. Slowly, the traffic quit, as they discovered that the address no longer worked.

      Google never did have a hit on that IP address. All I can figure was that it was an IRC thing.

      So, I have learned that if I am leaving a server on over a weekend and don't get all the security set up and downloaded, pull the network cord.

          I wouldn't be surprised if some bot figured out working credentials and a high school kid was using it to store stuff he didn't want his mom to see. I had an FTP running on a home server for a couple of days and had several thousand login attempts.

          Back in my wild 4chan days, it wasn't uncommon to see a thread where someone had broken into an FTP and was using it to distribute child porn or other nefarious files.
