I just finished reading Gulp, Mary Roach's book about the alimentary canal, and the chapter about this procedure was easily the most interesting in the book. It seems gross, but it's an incredibly simple procedure with a very high success rate.

I've read Stiff and Packing for Mars and loved them. I heard Gulp was not for the queasy - was it good?

There's a new Roach book? And I'm not currently reading it? Damnit, I'm now disappointed in myself.

I know you're going for the funny, but "in your butt" makes it sound like they just smear some right in the anus or something. Is using the word "intestines" really that much of a downer? How about "in your gut"? Cute, but accurate.

It actually doesn't go up that high. It's put in the colon, not the intestines or gut.

From what I understand, they run a tube through your nose down into your stomach and place the fecal matter there. My hubby is a microbiology student and they just studied this in a class last week.

I wonder why they can't just isolate the good bacteria by itself and use just that...

Because there are so many different bacteria and they all interact with each other in ways we don't fully understand. They need to recolonize all of them so they keep each other in check and produce whatever reactions take place in a healthy colon to keep things running smoothly (pun intended).

Your intestinal system actually supports a pretty complex ecosystem and we don't really understand it that well. We don't know everything that's in there, how much we need of each, or how to culture them in a lab. We're working on understanding these things better, but bacteria are complicated to study and there's still a long way to go. While a fecal transplant is gross in concept, it's much more efficient and effective with our current level of understanding of our gut microbiome.

The poop suppliers must have an interesting job. I wonder if they got a group of people to eat a special diet or anything, or if it's just members of the lab with relatively healthy digestive tracts.

At this point, the donors are all employees of OpenBiome.

I had a fecal transplant last April - so if anyone has questions about how it works, lay 'em on me!

Hi! Why did you need your transplant? Did it help you get better?

I've had C Diff and it's fucking terrifying. It's like your skin is burning off. I got it after almost dying from having my wisdom teeth out in hospital - it was a rough couple of weeks. I'm grateful mine was treated sucessfully with two weeks of hardcore antibiotics. Whatever they can do to help people is ok with me. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I got C Diff in 2012 from an antibiotic (Clindamycin)I was rx'd after having a molar pulled. I am allergic to "cillins". My stool tests kept coming up negative and my dr just thought I was having antibiotic related diarrhea. I was told to take probiotics. At one point I had lost 11lbs in 2.5 weeks. Finally I was sent for a 3rd stool test by my GI ( the first was from the ER and the 2nd by my PCP). I was put on a 2 wk course of Vancomycin and a bile binder so anything that I ate wouldn't immediately come out the other end. After the 2 wk course was finished, I was good for maybe a week and then my symptoms started up again. My GI doc refused to put me on another course of the Vanco so my only other option was a fecal transplant. A friend donated her stool and I had to blend it in a blender with sterile water (no lie. I was given the blender to use by my dr's office) and then he performed the fecal transplant like a colonoscopy. Afterwards, I was told I had a mild case (it had been about 3 months since contracting it). I couldn't imagine having it any worse than I did for only a mild case. I used to be embarrassed to tell people about this, but it "cured" me so I have to look at it that way. I am now terrified of antibiotics though.

Ya I was told to watch for it then they didn't bother to tell me for 3 days that I had it. And same thing - went away with no treatment then came back days later with a vengeance. Drove myself to ER. Combined with the arterial bleeds in my sinus as well as the C Diff I lost a ridiculous amount of weight. BUT - before this nightmare I had what I guess you'd call IBS. Couldn't be sure what would set it off and I was scared to eat when I was out. Popped pre-emptive immodium all the time. Since C Diff and flagyl for two weeks NOTHING. I can eat whatever I want. Makes me wonder if I had it for years? I dunno.
