This makes total sense, from a security perspective. Amber Alerts would be a thing of the past, when the kidnapper's vehicle would be identifiable within minutes. They'd be able to interdict human and drug smuggling with much greater ease, and it would make investigating criminal organizations much easier. That said, the odds of this database being abused on a daily basis are near-100%.

people get squeamish when I say this, but I would rather have the occasional guilty person go free, then limit the freedom of everyone.

So, I guess Americans are OK with this as long as they have a job that pays for their kids braces and no one fucks with their 401K and there's a new season of House of Cards?

Also, how does spying on US make us safer from THEM?

Surveillance of Americans makes sense if you believe most criminals in America are Americans. The fun thing will be if they build discrimination into the infrastructure, say by just happening to never put a tag reader near the local country club, or within 500 yards of City Hall. Or if they exclude government tags from the registry. The opportunities for corruption are endless!

I'm not freaked out only because I thought this already existed.

ETA: The private contractor part freaks me out, though.

Yeah. I always breathe easier when I know a private contractor (AKA: the free market) is involved. Look at how well the free market did protecting all those guys on wall street when they ruined the economy of the entire planet and then gave themselves bonuses! I'm sure it will work just as well here, especially given the fact that this is all private information.

Oh ok. Why is it that the people that make statements like this actually know less then nothing. Point to where the free market was at play there. Saying "Wall Street" doesn't imply a non coercive economy when it is so entangled in our federal government. Are you aware of how the federal reserve works? Lobbying?

I really hope this doesn't bring your stupid troll ass out of the grey, but I'll risk it. First of all, the "free market" is what made all these wall street yokels able to pilfer billions from the American people and the global economy, first through credit default swaps and unregulated trades that were entirely bullshit (and offering loans to people that they knew couldn't pay them off - I actually worked at a bank in 2007 and 2008 and quit when I saw the writing on the wall), then through bailouts in the form of tax dollars. The "free market" made it possible for these fucking ass clowns to lobby the government to get whatever they wanted. The "free market" is what makes it possible for the federal reserve to operate the way it does.

So, in short, fuck you, I know what I'm talking about.

So, with a private contractor is going to be interested in one thing primarily: profit. What we can expect is a world in which private surveillance groups are not only watching us to make sure we stay in line, but also data-mining our behaviors of where we are traveling in order to create some kind of direct-marketing advertising system? As in, when you drive around, your radio/CD/MP3/cassette system is interrupted by an inane commercial that you have to wait 15 seconds to skip?

The internet is coming to the real world!
