Just an aside, but there are still several Entenmann's outlets similar to Hostess's old 'thrift stores'. Everything is marked down and about three days from expiring. I have actually stood trembling from excitement in front of shelves at the Astoria location.

Yes, Friehofer's has thrift stores, too, and they sell Lender's bagels, Thomas's Eng muffins, etc.

Damn, you just bought back a memory I haven't had in a long while. We used to go to the Hostess Thrift store all the time — the Apple and Lemon Pies were about five, maybe even six, for a dollar.

You could't really stock up though as everything at the store was at, or really close to, its expiration date. Some of the baked good were free — and we'd always go to the duck pond right afterwards to feed our free bread to the ducks and squirrels (free entertainment!).

On seeing the above picture though, I threw up a little in my mouth. Some memories may be best left in the past.

Thank God it wasn't a photo of the nutritional facts on the back...

I grew up in the midwest and we have the same for Dolley Madison snacks. It was literally like a castle for me. I couldn't believe one place sold so many delicious mounds of sugar, branded with Peanuts characters.

Can I tell you that Big Lots has great cosmetics deals? Lots of limited editions of drugstore-level brands (L'Oreal, Revlon) and discontinued things that I loved. I know people think it's depressing, but seriously, take a stroll around a Big Lots sometime. A lot of it is flimsy junk, but you can find some major deals.

Yep! That's the second place I go (first is the food aisle for Special K Chocolate Delight and whole cashews for $3.50 a can). I stocked up when they have foundation in my hard to find color, and I try out products I didn't want to pay full price for.

Back before Christmas there was a rumor they had Essie nail polish for like $2 bottle. never saw it in my local stores but they have a ton of Opi by Sephora.

Excellent choice. I also get cereal (and laundry detergent) at Big Lots. They also have a lot of European cookies, Red Mill products, etc. Most of the "healthier" stuff is untouched, so I always walk away with really nice stuff.

If you like to read cosmetics blogs, try http://nouveaucheap.blogspot.com/. They always are on the prowl for Big Lots sightings (Essie, OPI, etc.).

There are dozens of sugary empty-calorie snacks, some of which are inexpensive. I'm not sure why Twinkies get singled out, other than that are a never-ending object of mockery for people too sophisticated to eat them.

True, although I live outside the U.S. and have never heard of the discount bakeries, which is interesting. I didn't realize that people had to pay more for the hostess products in a grocery with produce than at a "bakery", because Twinkies cost about the same everywhere here (significantly more) since they're all imported at a steep mark-up. It is cheaper for people to shop in large grocery stores here.

Does anyone actually eat Twinkie's non-ironically anymore?

I brought my seven year old with me to the grocery store last time I went and he begged and begged for banana flavored Twinkies. So gross. He didn't get them, but he would have very unironically eaten the entire box if I had.

How would your seven year-old know what a Twinkie tastes like?

I'm going to register this as a domain name for XXX creampie videos. It works on so many levels.

I don't know what to tell you. I can think of several ways this can be used metaphorically or as a crude descriptor for the creampie genre.

Underpaid blogger usually equals trust fund baby. So equation does not really compute.

I once had a "imitation" twinkie at a bakery in Zurich... It cost me $10 and was fantastic. I have never had a real twinkie but I have a friend who buys them by the case and gives them out as holiday presents.
