I thought we all agreed to disavow the Weather Channel's stupid winter storm names? Let's just call it "Another one of these motherfuckers."

I think it's funny that the first four comments about this post (including mine) were all about the name, which is probably the least important element of the story.

Here in Boston I read an editorial yesterday arguing that we've all become pussies and it's ridiculous to make school closure decisions overnight before any snow falls, and that everyone who sees weather like yesterday's (snow from 2 AM to at least 10 PM or so, probably 8 - 12" depending) and stays home is a sign of "Kids These Days" or whatever. I love snow personally but I think it's smart when cities shut down early to make way for plows and avoid unneeded accidents. Plus we have a lot of idiot (if experienced) winter drivers here in MA. I don't mind giving them an excuse to stay off the streets.

TL, DR: other than emergency services, do we REALLY need everyone to go to work when driving conditions are dangerous and public transit is fucked?

    Here is the article: http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2014/02/…

Schools would close the night before all of the time when I was a kid, which was quite some time ago.

And parents are more likely to both work so giving them added time to get their things in order makes sense.

And fuck the Boston Globe. Also I could go and take a picture of Post Office Square on the sunniest day of the week that wasn't at lunch hour and it would look desolate. That was meaningless.

i feel this is true to an extent. i grew up in CT and remember getting a decent amount of snow every winter. we'd constantly hope for school closings and it never happened.

currently in NY now, but it seems like whenever there is a storm everyone just loses their shit.

Stop feeding the Weather Channel's naming system, Gawker. I thought we all agreed that Fetch wasn't going to happen.

I've gone 180 on this. YES its a cynical PR stunt by the weather channel, YES its a bit arbitrary, but goddamnit if it doesn't help keep track of things. The Weather Channel brilliantly exploited a hole in our pop meteorological taxonomy and we're all the better for it, if for no other reason than we were running out of "snowpocalypse" puns.

Also, can't we all agree that the fact that "fetch isn't a thing" has become a thing means that fetch, in some sense did become a thing.

But another big storm is coming. A Philadelphia meteorologist says the "megastorm" predicted by computer models and shown on several recent maps by the WeatherBell company

"It seems highly unlikely now of happening"

    Do what now?

A big storm is coming, but not the "Megastorm" that the freakout maps showed earlier this week.

Ok, so the winter storm naming thing is supposed to be based on mythological gods and goddesses right? So wouldn't this name really be Nike? Nika seems like a cop-out. Wikipedia offers "Nika" as an alternate spelling for "Nike" on a redirect page, but this seems to have been added relatively recently.

Being in a non-floodplane part of the east coast, I almost prefer hurricanes. At least with them, once the storm is over, the sun comes out, and the utilities can start the cleanup. With the winter storms, they fuck up the infrastructure AND leave snow and ice everywhere to slow up the utility response.

I thought for a moment that this was, but then I remember the storm that knocked out power across Ontario and Atlantic Canada, back right around Christmas... and... well, it was just bad. But, no power + Christmas = worse.

Funny enough, I was in Philadelphia when that storm hit. It was 70F/22C that day down there...heh. At least this time around, Toronto only got some very manageable snow. I'm still very much looking forward to the end of winter.

And to think that The Weather Channel wants to put on less weather-related programming in favor of more compelling reality shows. Doesn't TWC realize that weather disaster porn sells?!

        1) the weather community naming these random storms is getting annoying
        2) its pretty crazy that we've come so far in meteorology yet still can't tell what's going to happen
        3) I am lucky as hell I live around where a lot of electric has gone out and mine hasn't gone out at all

Stop. It's only the weather channel doing this. Don't blame any other highly inaccurate forecasters for that.
