I guess he doesn’t want reporters writing prescriptive statements (?)

I was taught to avoid worlds like "should" and "many" and "some." Some actually drives me fucking crazy. Once an editor changed my lede to lead with "some" and I flipped. But, it all depends on the context.

Maureen Dowd: Here's a funny little anecdote I thought of whilst discussing the whole issue of cum. Did I mention I know Bush personally?

Fuck. Shit. I use "should" all of the time. I hope I don't get sued for copyright (trademark?) infringement.

Even more horrifying, they could send Tom Friedman to your home to interview you. A fate worse than death.

Why would you even say that at nigh-time before I have to go to bed?!?!

I'll cling to my irrelevance like a teddy bear but it won't keep all the monsters away tonight.

I feel as though the moustache grew Tom Friedman, not the other way around.

The Times editorial page is not "liberal leaning."

It leans left, but dresses right, I think, which is why it's always so awful to read.

If the rest of the paper has excellent and smart journalists, how fucking hard is it to apply that to the columnists? Why do NYT and WaPo suck in editorial? Is it because they don't want to lose conservative readers? Is it because they fear any actual insights into the world and this country will lose readership? Are they thinking like movie and TV studios—any originality is going to be too much for the dumb masses? What is the deal with editorial pages?

The journalists who make it to the editorial board have been thoroughly vetted by the corporation. They aren't the trailblazers, the smart-asses, the rule-challengers. They are the ones who sucked up and toed the company line. To be entrusted with the voice of the institution, or one of its official voices, requires you to be a major toady. That's why.

what twizzler said, plus from the linked NYO article it sounds like the problem lies mainly with Andrew Rosenthal, the NYT's editorial page chief. Answers only to the publisher, who feels indebted to Rosenthal's dad's many years of service, and sounds generally reluctant to challenge him. With no one challenging him, Rosenthal is free to act the petty tyrant and hog funding while any actual skills he has atrophy and he grows increasingly out of touch. That's the NYO's take anyway. read the linked article perhaps?

One reporter says that he literally will not allow Mr. Rosenthal to join their lunch table in the cafeteria.

For me, the op ed section is limited to Krugman. It's much better that way.

Is Gail Collins still there? She can be amusing. A Molly Ivins for the New York set.

Tom Friedman, on the other hand, when conversing with Lebanese olive farmers, found a sense of enthusiasm for Tom Friedman's writing. "How smart and wonderful Tom Friedman is. We are glad he has come to our country." one farmer remarked.
