You're rich, famous and funny. This is not a combo that usually needs roofies.

This is good. Let's dig it all up, let's drag it all out in the open. When we pay money to be entertained by abusers, we enable the system of wealth and influence that gives them the power to abuse. While we're at it, let's call out Sean Penn and Josh Brolin.

THANK YOU. You said this better than I could. This culture of sweeping abuse under the rug has got to stop, it's an absolute disgrace.

There is a volcano of sexual assault cases erupting in the UK right now on the heels of the Jimmy Savile revelations. An astounding number of venerated British television and media personalities are being accused, investigated, and tried for crimes spanning decades. Not even joking, there is generally one page of the Metro (the morning free paper for commuters) devoted to updates on the myriad cases. I call it the Rape Page (what's happening this morning in high-profile rapists?).

It is profoundly depressing and disgusting, but much, much better out in the open.

I am another one who has no memory of any of this. This was actually widely reported? I don't understand how I didn't know this.

That said, what an utter joke that none of this appears to have had any impact on his rep as a basically good, funny and warm human being.

No kidding. God damn, I remember NONE of this and it's all so damningly consistent. It is extremely unlikely that a dozen strangers all independently invented nearly identical stories about his behavior, especially considering how little attention those stories got in the press. I swear I have never heard any of this before in my life, and it's not surprising; finding out Bill Cosby is probably a rapist would be like finding out Fred Rogers was a cannibal. (If that's true nobody tell me.) The information is just so upsetting and unpalatable that the brain tries to reject it immediately. No one wanted to write about it because no one wanted to think about it, I suppose.

I don't, but a friend of mine, die-hard Cosby fan his whole life, got to take care of his needs at a performance. Bill was an absolute asshole. So he's a good actor apparently, or maybe just one of the 1%.

"Anyone who didn't think about it before now had chosen not to think about it."

Or was not born yet/ too young to read Vanity Fair when the article came out. I'd never heard a word about it until this year.

Are you angry about the Woody Allen mess or your perception of the damage it does to your whiteness? I honestly don't think you have anything to worry about on the last issue so settle down.

Also, I don't believe anyone of import regards Allen to be a molester just because they heard so on a gossip site.

What you've done here is vile and self-serving speaks to latent racial bigotry.

I'm impressed by the people who believe that other people would believe that serial rape allegations somehow cancel out a child-molestation allegation.

Try focusing on the similarities between the cases instead, maybe?

Maybe you missed the name "Barbara Bowman" up there in the item. And if you follow the links to the Philadelphia Magazine coverage, you'll see the names of the others. Four separate people, three of whom had no chance of gaining anything under the statute of limitations, put their names to their accusations.

I'd say the reason fewer people recall the allegations against Cosby is that we went through them in '05 and '06, which was before there were hundreds of blogs, ubiquitous internet and user-generated media aggregating the same stories over and over. This is not to say that all this media is a bad thing, though a little variety among the brand-name titles would be nice, but run a search using Woody Allen quote making the rounds today and you'll get 761 results. Add to that all of the retweets from prominent Twitters and thousands of blog comments, there's a huge echo chamber of disgust which was still in its formative stage nine years ago. (Defamer launched in '04)

Cosby's story was on Today, probably Entertainment Tonight, in People and I remember it being picked-up by tabloids and newspapers, but there wasn't this big machine creating the illusion of life to the story. If you didn't watch that particular Today Show or look at that week's People, the story may find its way into his Wikipedia entry, but it was basically gone.

I TOTALLY agree with this. A few days ago, I said that we needed to remember how powerful and respected Woody Allen was by the mainstream press when thinking about early coverage of the case. And also about a general attitude of propriety.

Before if there had been an over-the-top crazy tribute by Diane Keaton, maybe a few people at work would have talked about it and then reminded each other about the allegations, but now we have the Farrows bringing it up on Twitter while the ceremony is going on AND outlets like Gawker bringing it up with details for days after. Dylan told her piece of it on a blog; it wasn't published in the NYTimes proper. It's like the internet is a barber shop with a built in media library that you go to several times a day.

Also, I don't think people were even going to wikipedia as chronically as they do now.

I honestly had never heard about them until today. I had heard lots of stories about him being an asshole to people but never this. Although, I was drunk for most of '05 and '06.

What can you say? We all compartmentalize. We all have blinders. Mia Farrow is still best buds with Roman Polanski. And so it goes.

Also, Mia Farrow's brother is a convicted child molester. She never says a bad word about him in Vanity Fair or on Twitter, and he spent more time at her house than Woody Allen ever did. Funny thing, that....
