It's interesting some TS woman are even MORE woman than "genetic" woman.

For those who doubts, look up "Mia Isabella" (NSFW, goes without saying).

And before you asked... I only heard of her last week, when she's the interviewee on "Sex with Emily" podcast.

How are you defining "more woman"?

My sister is trans, male to female, and she enjoys things that are typically associated with females more than I do. Does that mean she's "more woman" than me? Why does someone have to be "more woman" than someone else? Why can't we just be women?

In what way is one woman "MORE" woman than any other woman?

I am giving you the benefit of the doubt and hoping that when you say "MORE" you really don't mean "HOTTER to me."

Cool. But it's Barneys, so it's still a very exclusive campaign targeting the privileged. Doesn't this site care about class-divide?

Really? The fact that Barneys serves high end clientele does not take away from the fact that this photo shoot is incredibly progressive and inclusive of a group of people who are constantly marginalized and the target of prejudice and assault.

It's kind of funny that they have black people in the ads, but they don't particularly like having black customers.

I'm a dude who took ever femstudies class he could in college. I understand trans* culture better than most of my peers. I have stone butch blues and the last time I wore a dress on my bookshelf.

But I just don't know how I would approach a relationship with a trans*woman. Perhaps that's cis-gender bias, perhaps it is transphobia. Perhaps it makes me a less than ideal ally, but it's also the truth of my experience. There are several trans*women that I find very attractive, but...maybe I need to think about all of this more.

You do; it seems like you're not an asshole, so this probably has more to do with your own behavior programming than anything else. We all internalize patriarchal norms, there's nothing shameful in that. There is, however, shame in knowing that you are probably wrong about your judgement but continuing to have said judgement.

That being said, not everyone is attracted to everyone. And as much as I think it's rude, as a transman, I suppose it's unfair to say that no one is allowed to restrict themselves to the binary if they truly only feel comfortable within it. I will say that you are missing out on a lot of amazing, beautiful women if you continue to restrict yourself in this fashion, however. :\

I am thrilled for these transgendered models and I am thrilled for the transgendered community in general for the exposure. But Barney's sucks, the fashion industry sucks and the trendiness of the look of transgendered models is suspect. As Ari pointed out, some of the people in those ads would be profiled by Barneys if they just walked in off the street.

Yeah, it's awesome exposure, and certainly praise-worthy. The big thing for me is how many of these models are going to continually get work with Barneys? Yes, let's all make a big to-do and celebrate, but once the SHOCKING! attention dies down, are they just consigned to the scrap heap of publicity stunts?

Cheerios bringing back the interracial family adverts is a great follow-through example that I respect. I loved the M&S campaign with the differently-abled, and the Wet Seal child model with Down Syndrome. Just keep that visibility coming until it not a BFD!!! THAT'S when I will be ready to heap on the praise, when I nearly forget I even should.

(Completely unrelated: I have a hard time typing 'Barneys.' I want to type 'Barney's. I need to Google the origin of this name).

I have to say though I am amazed at how great his chest looks. The first person I know to transition did so years ago and the surgery left a big ass scar that made him still feel uncomfortable shirtless. I'm so stoked for people that it has improved this much.

The shoot looks gorgeous. I think it's interesting that the fashion industry has been seemingly welcoming to trans and otherwise gender queer models, while Hollywood has a much harder barrier to break through. The lovely and talented Lorraine Cox is an incredible exception, too often we see things like Jared Leto playing a trans woman.* I wonder what accounts for that difference?

    * great article on why Leto playing a transwoman is problematic: http://www.policymic.com/articles/72749…
