If you're throwing the food out, then the money has been spent either way. So literally all you're doing is humiliating the child for something that I'm sure they have basically no control over. How was this something that seemed like it was okay to the employees?

Because, as I have come to realize in my short 'adult' life; most "adults" are anything but.

I was trying to come up with something snarky to say, but all I can think of is "what a bunch of fucking bullshit."

I just said this in another thread but if someone told you to take away lunches from hungry kids, wouldn't you say "That's fucking ridiculous. I'm not doing it"?

Economics, blah, blah, personal responsibility, yadda, yadda. Allow me to break it down to its simplest level for anyone who thinks the school acted correctly and that in the grander scheme this principle will solve the fiscal crisis:

They would rather throw food away than feed a hungry child.

Part and parcel with a culture that would rather throw homeowners out on the streets and let the house sit vacant rather than work to refinance their mortgage in an equitable way.

Something is CLEARY wrong when your task has become the literal snatching of food from hungry children.

    Seriously humans? Seriously?

They threw it away? What a waste. They should have just given the rich kids extra portions.

A Facebook apology is not enough. They should be personally apologizing, face to face and individually, to every single child whose lunch was seized.

I was just thinking, if a family has problems keeping up with the school lunch tab, what are the chances that their internet would be paid up?

Good point. I mean jeez, I hope their internet isn't paid up, if they can't afford to keep the lunch account current.

Of course my dad, who monetarily did not have problems keeping up with bills, would let them go for months sometimes, just out of pure flakiness. I could easily have been one of those kids. Whatever the reason taking it out on them in that fashion is not ok.

That "spokesman" should be fired. He may not be responsible for this debacle, but he sure isn't very good at PR! He can move to NJ and take Drewniak's job when he goes to jail.

This is more than a simple lack of nutrition for the day. There is nothing worse than being humiliated in the school lunch room for being poor. I was in a free school lunch program when I was kid and used to hide my orange ticket (which marked you as a charity case) for fear of getting beat up. Kids don't soon forget this kind of embarrassment.

My school had a two tier system and everybody else would get these deluxe lunches and I had the bare bones. I remember being in third grade watching kids so excited about chicken finger or pizza day and a brownie for desert while I was eating peanut butter and jelly, again. Fortunately, my best friend was in the same boat, so we'd just go off and eat together and then whoop that ass at amoeba tag.
