I am from Texas, and am admittedly a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment (not popular here, I know). But holy shit, there's a limit as to who should have a gun and it starts with not being batshit insane. Maybe you take a moment to assess the situation before firing off a shot? Maybe it's a girl scout coming to sell you a cookie? Maybe it's a NEW FUCKING NEIGHBOR CHECKING OUT HIS LAND???

Then you're not a very strong supporter of the Second Amendment as it is currently understood legally. He was a "responsible gun owner" until he murdered two people, now he's "batshit insane."

...And obviously crazy, irresponsible imbeciles should not be allowed to have weapons of any sort. I still support a yearly exam by a psychiatrist and a gun safety exam to weed out stupid and irresponsible people. This person is clearly just a asshole.

""These two men had every legal right to be where they were," said McComas."

And even if they somehow had been on his property what then? This "shoot first" mentality is very disturbing. Could he not have asked them? He had his gun with him. Presumably he was pointing it at them. Wouldn't this give a 62 year old an advantage over a 60 and 61 year old? Wouldn't this give him a chance to ask something like. . . I don't know. . . "what are you doing on my property?" Or perhaps he could have called the cops?

    I just don't know anymore.

Well it says he killed them with a rifle from a distance. So probably never even got close enough to bother trying to find out who they were or what they were doing there.

My neighbor in the Catskills has property with a beautiful waterfall in it and it sees a lot of trespassers. They just politely tell the people that it's private property, however if you want to use it just ask ahead of time if no one else is there. Sometimes people skinnydip.

Apparently, these are photos of Garrick Hopkins (based on what I found here):

Now, I wonder what caused Mr. Black to be so frightened of this man and his brother that he shot and killed them? What could it be? Hmmm ....

Well, well, well... isn't this shocking. The Zimmerman case certainly set a fine example for crazy white people to Stand Their Ground.

The victims, it turns out, were his new neighbors, checking out their property for the first time.

Time to go back to bed for the day. Nothing else I see or read will convince me that the world is moving in the right direction.

    Two black guys eh?

    Yeah.

I'm never leaving New York. Ever again. I want to thank the libertarians out there and the GOP and everyone on the right side of the political spectrum for terrifying the shit out of white folk to such an extent in this country that you can get shot for looking at a shed.

There is a sea of rednecks out there that honestly believe that since Obama got elected any black people you see are basically up to no good.

    Again, thank you for this.

Yep, being black in West Virginia really sucks (not that I am either black or in WV, I just keep track of trends, polling and know people who are). In terms of clannish xenophobes and racists appalachia has the rural south beat. If you can believe that.

I wonder if this guy is now remorseful about the shootings, or if he is sitting in his cell right now grousing about the tyrannical police state impinging on his freedom.

Since he's older, he probably doesn't even understand why it's a big deal. Like really just does not get why he's even being held up or not having his word taken at face value.

I've got the feeling many have this mindset, and that stand your ground law was created with them in mind, though constructed by those who will be them when they reach that stage of life. It's partially why I think that dude down in Florida shot and killed that dude in the theater for texting.

So the "oops" is that they had purchased the property, but murdering the strangers on sight for getting close to what he thought was his shed is.... what he had intended to do? How would that be any less fucking crazy? Probably not worth parsing out the irrationality of this old fuck.

Yeah, that's the next level of insane in this story. Even if they WERE a couple of geriatric trespassers, straight up killing them like that would STILL be fucked.

but with stand your ground (not sure if they have that law in WV), all he has to do is claim to have been in fear of his life. they may have had popcorn on them, after all.
