I know everyone loves to make fun of Rob Ford but as a woman of color it's hard not to be a little bit pissed off about how flagrantly and publicly White men can subvert the laws of the land - not to mention good taste and common sense - and still basically get away with it.

Is this new? Is this not so new? Regardless, the important thing to realize with Ford is the culture he is a part of. The cultural faux pas are not going to be miraculously fixed with removal of this mayor. Think of the person in the video at 0:47 saying "this guy deserves to be even better than Prime Minister Harper" etc referring to Ford. These people are all around and there are many such people who don't give a damn about respectability, but prefer bravado and opinionated discourse to civil debate over researched facts. The love the guy because his temperament is a small representation of the sorts of things they wish they could condescendingly speak to a larger public audience. The rude bullying personality is not isolated to one man, but is indicative of the many who have slid into this terrain. As our education grows worse, and the neoliberalization of Canada comes to the fore, brash opinions are taking the place of substantive arguments, and by that measure stereotyping people will become only more common. Don't think this man Ford speaks alone. Realize he is indicative of the cultural shift affecting a vast swath of the public. So if you want to criticize him, please don't do the neoliberal thing and venture into opinion based statements about him being "fat" or "ugly", that only bolsters his fans and shows tacit support of the opinionated way of disagreeing today. Instead make a substantial argument using facts. Don't sink to the same lowest common denominator and use hyperbole and conflagration to link his weight etc to his actions.
