Statistically, you are eight times more likely to be killed by the police than by a terrorist in this country, yet our government spends millions, perhaps billions, of taxpayer money doing this shit. If you think it's because they are scared of terrorists, you're wrong. It's because they are scared of us.

They aren't only looking for terrorists. They collect intelligence from all kinds of foreign targets for a bunch of different reasons, including in areas where we have troops to gather on the ground intelligence.

Perhaps, but that doesn't make it any less wrong. We are now at a point in our history where technology is advancing faster than our laws can. I'm not sure that bodes well for our freedom moving forward.

I wouldn't mind so much if they would just include themselves in the conversation every now and again. Like,

"Where is everybody going for Superbowl this year?"

    and

"Who wants to hit up the Chinese buffet at lunch?"

Seriously NSA, some response would be nice...no one like a Sally Silent.

Left and right, I hear people say "Snowden should have stayed here to face trial, then he'd be a hero of conscience instead of a cowardly traitor". I don't know what they're smoking; do you think it's possible that Snowden was smart enough to realize that he wasn't going to get a fair trial, and that he might actually be "disappeared" for what he was doing? Snowden, in my book, was the Man of the Year (and in a good way), not the Pope.

It was heroic for choosing to tell us, smart for knowing to leave first, and puzzling for choosing China in his escape plan.

Where was he going to go where he wouldn't have been extradited? As I recall, he tried and failed to get Iceland; I think it became any port in a storm. I'm not comfortable with him sharing data with other countries (though I think that when U.S. politicians say he's "gravely jeopardized" our security they're just blowing smoke), though it doesn't bother me at all when he reveals we're tapping other nation's leaders - to me, the "news" on that count isn't that "everybody does it", it's that the various leaders have to feign umbrage because their citizenry is so pissed off about it.

and they still can't point to one attack they've prevented. but, boy, oh boy, the dossiers they are able to assemble on you — and those who can be expected to do their bidding....

They remind me so much of McCarthy back in the 50s.

"We have evidence, right here that totally shows this spying program has stopped dozens of terrorist attacks....of course, we're not going to show you this evidence, or allow it in the courts, but trust us, we gots it."

200 million text messages a day? There sure are a lot more terrorists out there than I thought, huh? I mean...assuming of course that they are only collecting info on terrorists, right? Because it's ONLY the badguys they are watching and not average law abiding American Citizens, right?

As long as Obama is doing it, I don't really have a problem with it. Imagine what happens when he leaves office, though.

I voted for him twice and love the man to death, but that is an incredibly foolish line of reasoning.
No administration should be doing this. If anything, I'm upset he is letting this happen on his watch.

There is a SWAT team outside your house right now. Please kiss your loved ones goodbye and come out with your hands up.

Well, today we get to see Obama do his dog and pony show about a government's surveillance of its own citizens. But it's all words. Meaningless words. He doesn't give a shit what you think. He is quite sure you are all idiots. Maybe he's right.
