I don't know what's so effing hard about watching your weight. Running/walking? FREE. MyFitnessPal (assuming you have a smartphone or computer, which I know not everyone does) is also free.

Cook your own food so you know what goes into it and it's a LOT cheaper than eating fast food every day. I'm sorry, I sound like an asshole, I know. Is my privilege showing? I don't know. I just don't understand why people can't/won't watch what they eat so don't make themselves have a heart attack.

What if everything you think it true of about US food policy turned out to be completely nonsense?

Would it help for you to learn that eating less and exercising more is not the best way to control your weight, your body will completely do it all on its own as long as you don't eat the wrong things.

Start with all processed sugar and then look into wheat/grains, you will find that these foods will create hormonal imbalance that causes everyone to gain weight eventually.

Our current food challenges is not too much food but, simply eating the wrong food.

It is proven science that it is not a factor of how many calories you consume but what types of foods you eat that will change your weight.

So ask the question, why are we killing our own people with bad science and bad food? Perhaps we should ask why an entire generation of people are eating the wrong things, and thinking that eating less is better science than simply eating the right things.

I know how to make an apple cheaper than a bag of cheetos.

Plant one in your front yard. Voila. Free apples. Every goddamn day.

Every day (in August, September and October) (unless the deer get to it) (if you have a lawn to plant it in).

I learned earlier this week that everyone that is overweight or obese is that way because of their goddamn thyroid gland. Nothing to do with higher caloric intake or lack of exercise. None at all.

Until we figure out how to make an apple cheaper than a bag of Cheetos

Simple: stop subsidizing the corn that creates them, and shift those subsidies to fruit and vegetable growers. That's why all this junk food is so cheap in the first place.

Completely agree, plus all the starvation we subsidize across the globe with our downright evil trade agreements, subsidies and export policies. Barely made the news when Clinton apologized for his 'devil's bargain' with Haiti and basically admitted he starved 10's of thousands of people in the third wold for the benefit of some voting-block farmers. Nothing even changed, Riceland is still the largest supplier of food to Haiti and will remain so because they can supply artificially cheap grains.

Instead of spending so much on the "war on obesity" the federal government should just save money and stop allowing corn subsidies which creates the HFCS in everything. Don't see how Republicans can argue with cutting government spending on something that isn't the military since that is the one golden calf.

I live in Austin and we're a relatively fit/active town. There really isn't a lot of fat people here, so I forgot that obesity is serious problem in this country...until I leave the city - holy fucking shit.

I once saw a lady in San Antonio, at a restaurant, that required two chairs - one for each ass cheek - to eat her giant plate of cheesy, meaty enchiladas. Wtf?! Wouldn't the TWO CHAIRS - when the average human being requires only one chair - be your wake up call to stop eating enchiladas and pick up a god damn carrot? I don't get it.

It's given rise to a new phenomenon, "hidden hunger," in which overeating crappy processed foods simultaneously leads to overweight and undernourished consumers.

Which, regrettably, is why vitamin and mineral supplements are necessary for a lot of people. Of course, your average grocery store vitamin is of poor quality and thus poorly absorbed, so you're back to the same dilemma with our poor quality, poorly absorbed food.

As someone who made a conscious choice to eat healthier a few years back, one thing I've noticed is that my body is "resensitized" to a lot of processed foods; they now taste overly rich/sickeningly sweet/too salty/too "artificial," and I largely don't *want* to go back to those bad-for-you foods. It's like breaking a spell and wondering why I ever ate that stuff in the first place!

About the taste thing, I noticed that as well. I believe adding more salt or sugar is a very easy way to 'fool' people into thinking your food product tastes good, especially when the food itself isn't very good to begin with.

"The new main division in Earth's population is an ever-growing rift between the frightfully obese and the frightfully hungry, experts say."

Those aren't mutually exclusive. A lot of the time, those people are one and the same.

No, I don't mean the same thing mentioned in the rest of the post (assuming you're talking about the hidden hunger and malnourishment... or maybe it's in the links, I haven't read those yet). I have yet to read anything that adequately explains why obese people are indeed so hungry. I have been in the lower to middle range of a normal BMI for pretty much all my life, save for two years that it took me to lose the 80 pounds I gained with my first pregnancy. During the beginning part of my weight loss experience, I was starving all the time. Stomach growling, lightheaded, cranky, tired, HUNGRY. That popped up every so often as I continued to lose weight, in spite of eating right and exercising. I was fat and I was hungry. I wasn't malnourished. I wasn't sad or stressed or anything. I don't think it was psychological because I would wake up from a dead sleep and feel like my stomach was gnawing itself out of desperation. And once my weight was in the range of healthy, it went away. I haven't ever felt hunger like that again. I just think that many obese people are hungry, and even when they're eating nutrient dense foods, they're still really, really hungry. I remember that feeling and it sucked. It makes me feel for people going through it.
