Of all the horserace-obsessed beltway hacks, Ezra Klein is the least obnoxious of the bunch. He, at least, sort of knows the frivolity of most of the shit he prints and does so with a dash of irony and perspective.

But eight-figures for more insider baseball porn? Jesus, I hope not. Especially since something that tedious could only be independently viable if it turned into a cynical influence peddling scheme a la Politico.

I like EK as well, but what in the living fuck are they going to spend eight figures on in setting up a new blog?

It's part of this deluded, Aaron Sorkin-eque myth that people find the inner workings of beltway hackery, devoid of any normative input, inherently interesting or relevant. This, frankly, is a pre-internet (and pre-irony) mode of thinking that's been largely displaced by more opinionated and critical (and cheaply made) new media. While it still has its niche, I'm personally not really sure how EK slicing and splicing the inner minutia of a crumbling empire is really all that intellectually urgent.

I don't understand what figures beyond six means but it sounds like a lot for a website.

CC ~ Ezra hasn't called lately so this is just a guess, but I'm thinking that he wants to go back to doing actual reporting across a range of issues. I was living in the DC area around the time it started to transition away from hard reporting to "analysis". The Post was once a great newspaper.

The Post was once a great paper!? That is astonishing. But I was also born in the (very) early 90s, so perhaps that is a significant factor.

I don't know how MSNBC didn't give him a show in their last shuffle. Look, I love me some Rachel Maddow Show, but The Rachel Maddow Show With Guest Host Ezra Klein is my jam. Those are probably my favorite two pundit shows, and it's a shame they're currently mutually exclusive.

Considering that (1) Chris Hayes is tanking and is unlikely to be replaced with another wonky, white male under 40, and (2) watching Klein assault standard enunciation on the tee vee is almost as painful as watching Shannon Sharpe do the same on the tee vee, Klein probably realizes that he needs to conjure his multimedia showcase in a way that doesn't involve the tee vee.

Yah, and Chris Hayes is way better on tv (and in print) than Ezra too.

Anybody should be happy to have Ezra Klein do anything, pay for it, and shut up. Who is going to have the last laugh when he builds his own media empire?

Well fuck, what else are they going to spend eight figures on? Dumb ass Post. They got to spend eight figures on something, they're a big business, gotta spend money to make money, stop spending and it's like a shark standing still. Why not stand out from the pack as the most detail-oriented? It's good as any other sales campaign and better than most.

They were planning to hire both Alec Baldwin and Martin Bashir. The 8 figures was for the legal team.

Klein is very direct and refreshing in the face of modern political media being a total self-serving clusterfuck, but I can see why the Post didn't think he was eight-figures worth of refreshing. Very few media persons or groups are at that grade. Some entire media corporations aren't. Besides, he's dealing with Bezos. Anything over two figures just be to register a new domain name is asking a lot of that man (and I don't mean that in any sort of negative manner).
